After following in his grandfathers and fathers footsteps in hosting mornings at 710 WOR New York, John R. Gambling has announced his retirement from the station effective December 20.
“Rambling With Gambling” at one point was the longest-running radio show in America; running from 1925 under John B. Gambling until 2000. John A. Gambling took over in 1959 and the current John R. Gambling in 1990 after co-hosting with his father beginning in 1985. The third Gambling left WOR in 2000 and returned in 2008 after a run at crosstown 770 WABC.
The retirement comes as WOR needs to make room for Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, who will be joining the stations lineup on January 1. The station will also add New York Mets baseball in 2014.
Clear Channel takes over. Local staff and personalities disappear.
Chances are, Gambling’s replacement will be a “big name”, who will also replace the other local morning shows on all of Clear Channel’s other talk stations.
