TPM on "Lady Gaga on B101?"

Among the 40 most aired "currents" at AC, according to Mediabase, are three Lady GaGa songs: #20-Paparazzi; 36-Bad Romance; 37-Poker Face. Just Dance is now an AC recurrent; it's a former "AC Top 40" hit. I'd say, blame Katy Perry. When Hot and Cold made it to the AC airplay chart, a lot of people said that a "limit" was broken.

The Lady GaGa songs on the AC listing may be deceiving, though. "Old fashioned" AC stations aren't playing them. "Lite Rock" stations are (such as WFPG, Atlantic City).

Could it be that B101 is moving away from "Soft AC" to the "Lite Rock" formula? It would make sense in a way -- to head off another station from attempting to hurt them with a borderline-Hot AC.

Brown, who became infamous for smacking around his girlfriend, Rihanna, after a pre-Grammy Awards ceremony, is asking fans to help him get his music back on the radio. (Photo: Gemma Mary, Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Generic license)

In a recorded statement through the website, SayNow.com, Brown says: “A lot of radio stations aren’t playing my records. They are not being that supportive and I wouldn’t expect them to. My music won’t be possible if I’m not relevant on the radio.”

Long time no chat! Yes... I do find it weird. They're playing both her songs on Magic 100.1 too. I thought it was weird. They're also playing Bad Romance which is even more absurd.

Not too surprised that the station would go talk, even though it would simulcast an AM station with the largest signal area in Dallas/Fort Worth.

We're seeing a massive migration of talk radio to FM; I wouldn't be surprised if in the next few years a large percentage of FM stations have some kind of talk or talk-oriented format.

I wonder if this wave of FM stations going talk has to do with a proposed regulation that would force radio stations to pay artists (as well as songwriters) when they play music.

I could understand if the "Texas Twister" format came on at 12:01 P.M., but the station being silent is puzzling.

Cosndiering Citadel's financial problems, could KPMZ-86.7 remain off the air until it is sold and reactivated by a new owner??

Merlin Olsen has passed away at the age of 69.

While he played 15 years with the then-Los Angeles Rams, and went on to costar in the TV series "Little House On The Prairie" and "Father Murphy", Olsen was best known as a TV football analyst. He spent a decade as NBC's lead NFL analyst, working for most of that time alongside D**k Enberg.

If my memory serves me correct, Olsen worked five Super Bowls for NBC, the first with Curt Gowdy and the other four with Enberg.

Fox Sports.com story: http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/NFL-Hall-of-Famer-Merlin-Olsen-dead-at-69-031110?GT1=39002 .

Has anyone ever heard them call a male's name? I mean, I know the station is aiming squarely at females but to pretend no males registered for the contest is crazy. I ask because...well, because I'm a male who registered and I listen almost every day and I don' think I ever heard them call a man's name. And also because today, I couldn't tell whether the 1:00 name was "Tiff" or "Tim."

I actually set up a calendar reminder to listen at 1:00 every weekday but the odds are stacked quite high against me so I think I'm gonna give up on t his particular $500 jackpot! haha.

Branding an Oklahoma City station "Tim-FM" would be like using "Osama FM" as a brand name for a radio station in New York or "Katrina FM" as branding for a radio station in New Orleans.

Very poor taste.

Hopefully, Tyler Media will end-up giving 93.3 a different "brand" that won't be so offensive.

Well, "warren.merrill" you are a tricky one aren't you.

Percentage of college grads as regular radio or tv listeners –

Limbaugh: 37%
CSPAN: 36%
CNN: 28%
MSNBC: 31%
NPR: 38%
National Average: 27%

Note: Limbaugh with "37%" -that alone places the average of his listeners outside the college educated strata.

"Percentage 50+ in age:
Limbaugh:51%, not 67%"

Note here that my remarks was "Limbaugh’s national listener average is a 67 year old white male w/high school education. "

Either you misunderstand the difference between -percentage- and an age median..or..you are being purposefully deceptive.

"Arbitron: Since 1991, Limbaugh has had the most-listened-to radio talk show in the United States...."

The term; "most listened too"- is a marketing tool and means little in actual business terms.

The -facts- are that Con-Talk stations often bill substantially less than straight new ot music formats in most markets -even with comparable 6+ shares.

Here in NYC the two conservative N/T's WABC and WOR bill substantially less than other stations with comparable ratings:

Here's the BIA list for 2008. figures are in millions.

1. WLTW $52.6

2. WINS $51.8 - All News

3. WHTZ $49.6

4. WCBS-AM $46.7 -ALL News

5. WFAN $38.9

6. WPLJ $31.1

7. WQHT $30.1

8. WSKQ $29.4

9. WAXQ $29.2

10. WBLS $28.0

11. WRKS $26.4

12. WKTU $25.6

13. WWPR $25.0

14. WABC $21.3 -Con Talk

15. WPAT-FM $20.8

16. WCBS-FM $18.5

17. WWFS $17.8

18. WXRK $15.9

19. WOR $15.1 Con-talk

20. WQXR $10.6

21. WRXP $10.4

22. WCAA $9.5

22. WADO $9.5

24. WEPN $9.3

25. WMCA $7.9

The reason for this disparity is not simply AM vs FM in fact, WCBS-am is now late (2009) the highest grossing station in the market, it is the demographics of the conservative audience.

Quoting:
"Note: I’m not a big Limbaugh fan. I just like dealing in realities and truth when it comes to facts."

Well then you might want to peruse these links:

http://people-press.org/report/319/public-knowledge-of-current-affairs-little-changed-by-news-and-information-revolutions -Not particularity good news for Democrats but truly grim for conservatives as their cohort is actually dying off.

http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2009/05/rush-limbaugh200905

Tyler Media moved Country “King Country 93.3” KKNG Oklahoma City to 97.3, the former home of “Jack-FM” KOJK at 2:00pm today. The shift slides KKNG from the 100kw Class C signal to a weaker 1kw Class A rimshot. All air personalities at KKNG are out as well including morning hosts Bill Thomas and K.C. Shepherd. KKNG has also removed all currents and recurrents from the music mix and gone completely Classic Country.

As far as 93.3 goes, it appears the Variety Hits format formerly on 97.3 will return in a new form. Tyler Media registered 933TimFM.com and TimFM933.com last week via a subsidiary.

We wonder how the “Tim-FM” moniker will go over in Oklahoma City given the connection the 1995 bombing by Timothy McVeigh.

On April 5, ESPN Radio will trim an hour off of middayer Colin Cowherd’s program to give him more time to prepare for his ESPN2 “SportsNation” program. “The Herd”, which currently runs from 10am to 2pm Eastern, will now end at 1:00. The lost hour will be transferred to Scott Van Pelt, who will now run from 1pm to 4pm.

This shift, along with the addition of more local programming will lead to lineup revamps at the ESPN O&O’s in New York and Los Angeles.

Seth Everett moves from nights to a 10am to 11am slot. Colin Cowherd’s national show airs from 11am to 1pm. Current 10am to 12pm host Brandon Tierney moves to 1pm to 3pm where he will be joined by Jody MacDonald. The Michael Kay Show drops an hour to run from 3 to 7pm, with the final hour keeping its “New York Baseball Tonight” theme. Bill Daughtry will host from 7pm to Midnight.

In Los Angeles, the national lineup of Mike & Mike followed by Colin Cowherd remain from 3 to 10am. The dropped hour from Cowherd leads to middayers Mychel Thompson and Andrew Siciliano sliding up an hour to air from 10am to 2pm. Steve Mason and John Ireland also slide up to run from 2pm to 6pm.

The Globe had an article on March 3rd regarding the change. They referred to Limbaugh as a shock jock with lackluster ratings. The Herald noted the change today as an article on Charley Manning but noted Limbaugh's change to 1200. Go figure The Globe is on the brink if disaster. They feel the need to editorialize a station change. Massachsetts is a different animal than most of the country. The people tend to be very provincial. Local sells better.

As for The Launch Of Rush Radio 1200:

Today (March 8th), up until 12:06 P.M. EST, WXKS-1200 ran a loop of soundbites from Rush (and other syndicated hosts it will carry) as well as excerpts of speeches from former President Ronald Reagan (who, almost six years after his death, remains a hero to conservatives and an arch-enemy to liberals).

Then at 12:06 came the start of the Rush Limbaugh show.

“Limbaugh’s national listener average is a 67 year old white male w/high school education. His audience has declined some 40% since the mid-late 1990s”

Is this the classic liberal, if we don’t know the facts we make them up approach?

From the Pew Research Center ….

Percentage of college grads as regular radio or tv listeners –

Limbaugh: 37%
CSPAN: 36%
CNN: 28%
MSNBC: 31%
NPR: 38%
National Average: 27%

Percentage 50+ in age:

Limbaugh:51%, not 67%

According to Arbitron, the top five programs are Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Mark Levin, and Michael Savage.

Arbitron: Since 1991, Limbaugh has had the most-listened-to radio talk show in the United States, with 14.25 million listeners a week as of March 2009. In 2003, he peaked with an audience of nearly 20 million a week.

His audience share peaked in 2003 not the mid 90’s. HIs share has declined a litlte more than 25% not 40%. There’s more competition now. But he’s still #1 by a large margin.

The thing I’ve always found interesting about liberals is they don’t care about facts since facts usually interefere with the truth. It’s much easier to make up facts and repeat them until the uninformed start to believe them.

Note: I’m not a big Limbaugh fan. I just like dealing in realities and truth when it comes to facts.

Update, March 8th, 2:45 P.M. EST:

Last night, shortly after the Academy Awards show began (according to news repoorts on radio stations WCBS-880 and WINS-1010), WABC-7 was restored to Cablevision subscribers after a deal was made.

Neither radio station mentioned details, but both reported that ABC/WABC and Cablevision both believed it was "fair".

Some three million homes served by Cablevision Systems Corporation in the New York metropolitan area (mainly on Long Island and in parts of Westchester County) may not be able to watch tonight's (March 7th) live ABC telecast of the Academy Awards.

That's because a dispute between WABC and Cablevision has resulted in the station's signal disappearing from affected cable systems.

At this writing (3 P.m. EST), there's little chance of some sort of agreement that would restore WABC to those subscribers.

Both sides have issued rather nasty statements with Cablevision blaming Disney (ABC parent) CEO Bob Iger. I suspect WABC will follow with an attack on Cabvlevision founder Chuck Dolan, who although no longer CEO (it's now his son James), is still considered the "real power" at the company.

MSNBC.com report: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35747720/ns/business-media_biz?GT1=43001 .

Should the ratigns for the Oscars slip by about 2% compared to last year, credit (or blame) could go to this dispute, since I believe (and correct my math if I'm wrong) that 3 million cable homes equals about two percent of the nation's TV households.

And remember that many cable homes do not have TV sets with digital tuners or digital-to-analog converter boxes that would allow one to watch WABC's over-the-air signal.

After 24 years as a Modern Rocker, Press Communications has flipped 106.3 WHTG-FM Eatontown, NJ and simulcast partner 106.5 WBBO Bass River Township, NJ to CHR as “Hit 106″.
Update 1/28/09: As expected, WJZZ became Urban AC “Magic 107.5″ today at 12am.

Net-Gnome Update 1/19/09:Over the weekend Radio-One registered a trio of domains that hint towards their plans in the Atlanta market.

Praise1025.com seems to hint at Gospel “Praise 97.5″ WPZE moving to the 102.5 frequency now hosting Talk/Urban Oldies “Grown Folks Radio” WAMJ.

MagicATL.com and MajicATL.com hints at WAMJ reclaiming one of its former monikers “Magic”. We’re going to have to assume that WAMJ’s format will move to a simulcast on 97.5 (which rimshots Atlanta from the southwest) and 107.5 (which rimshots Atlanta from the northeast).

Original Entry 1/14/09: Another exodus from Smooth Jazz is coming as Radio-One is planning to flip 107.5 WJZZ Atlanta over the next few days. PD Dave Kosh and personality Greg Fitzgerald were let go as part of the changes.

While the station is still broadcasting automated Smooth Jazz, the format will soon go by the wayside. With Martin Luther King Day and President Obama’s inauguration coming next week, Radio-One could have the perfect time to promote something to its target African-American audience.

107.5 WJZZ Atlanta To Change Formats

Because of changes in the radio industry and the way radio audiences are measured, stations in this market are being forced to play too much Britney, Puffy and alternative music that is neither new nor cutting edge. Due to these challenges, Indie 103.1 was recently faced with only one option — to play the corporate radio game.

We have decided not to play that game any longer. Rather than changing the sound, spirit, and soul of what has made Indie 103.1 great Indie 103.1 will bid farewell to the terrestrial airwaves and take an alternative course.

This could only be done on the Internet, a place where rules do not apply and where new music thrives; be it grunge, punk, or alternative – simply put, only the best music.

For those of you with a computer at home or at work, log on to http://www.indie1031.com and listen to the new Indie 103.1 – which is really the old Indie 103.1, not the version of Indie 103.1 we are removing from the broadcast airwaves.

We thank our listeners and advertisers for their support of the greatest radio station ever conceived, and look forward to continuing to deliver the famed Indie 103.1 music and spirit over the Internet to passionate music listeners around the world.

Original Entry 1/15/09 11:00am EST: The RadioInsight.com Net Gnomes have discovered that Entravision Communications is planning on changing formats at Los Angeles’ Modern Rocker “Indie 103.1” KDLD/KDLE.

A pair of domains: elgato1031.com and 1031elgato.com were registered to Entravision in late December. The former points to an Under Construction page for the new station, while the latter redirects to a sister station in Sacramento.

Last week Entravision shuffled formats at a bunch of their stations nationwide. Many switched from its Spanish CHR “Super Estrella” format to Adult Hits “Jose”. In El Paso, TX one of the stations, 94.7 KSYE debuted the new “El Gato” format. Billboard described the format as such:

Featuring contemporary regional Mexican music, “El Gato” debuted on KYSE El Paso (94.7 FM) on Jan. 6 and plays music by acts such as Horóscopos de Durango, Intocable and K-Paz de la Sierra.

It also includes Entravision show “Erazno y Chokolata” in the afternoons.

Indie 103.1 is one of the most critically acclaimed radio stations in America and it will be interesting to see if any of its elements are able to transition elsewhere.
