raccoonradio on "WGBH dumps folk, blues programming"

If the FCC as expected approves the sale of WCRB to WGBH, WCRB 99.5 will stay classical but go non-commercial and WGBH will be more of a news-talk oriented station. They just announced the "difficult decision" to dump their Sat. afternoon folk and Sat. night blues shows, which had run for many years (in the case of the latter, Mai Cramer had done over 25 years by the time she passed on earlier this decade; Brendan Hogan had hosted it more recently).
They point out other spots on the dial do offer blues or folk (and there's also HD or
satellite radio if you prefer). But some stations may not be powerful, and the HD
and satellite options don't necessarily offer DJs or local content.

According to plstylists posed on Yes.com, WEZK-102.5 St. Louis and WNIC-100.3 and WMGC-105.1, both in Detroit, all took the plunge today (November 6th).

Early this afternoon, the 100000 Watts.com All-Christmas list did not have these stations (I submitted an E-Mail to them with the same information as this post), but did list 18 stations that had gone all-Christmas.

With the three stations I let them know had gone all-Christmas, that now makes at least 21.

That's, if my memory serves me correct, a couple of more than on November 6th of last year, but here in Boston, both WODS-103.3 and WROR-105.7 went all-Christmas last year on this date. As of 1:55 P.M. EST, neither station (nor anyone else in Boston) had yet flipped to an all-Christmas format.

Tom on "if anyone really cares wrdw hd-2 is back up"

Keep in mind that each additional HD channel splits the tiny amount of bandwidth with the main HD (HD1 I suppose you'd call it) So it starts out with a measly 96K stream (even my MP3's are 256k) and for each additional HD channel you split off some bandwidth - so you may wind up with HD1 at 64K and HD2 at 32K or HD1 at 48K, HD2 at 32K and HD3 at 16K or some such combination.

It's possible that some companies want to keep the "main" HD sounding as good as possible, or they don't feel that it's worth all the effort for the 3 people with radios.
I personally have 3, at home, in the office and in one car, but can't pick up any stations unless I'm on the road.

Oh - the reason they are "off the air" now and then is because the exciters (transmitter) is a Linux computer, and prone to hard drive crashes and things like that. Since computer technology advances so fast, you can't even find an 80gig hard drive to put in the things, what was once big and expensive is now obsolete and not available, and some of the mother boards won't support the "small" drive of today, which is probably 500gigs. So when an HD goes down, it may require rebuilding the whole thing to get it to work. Since only a few people are listening, and no money is being made, it's not that big a deal to not have a backup. That MAY change, but who knows.

WIP: Lookin' good this book. I can't imagine why.

WHYY: Has been posting steady declines (3.6 - 3.5 - 3.1 - 2.9), not that it matters.

WISX: This might be a good year for them to try the all-Christmas stunt.

WYSP: My records stretch back to September 2008 and their latest numbers--a 2.7 share and 994,300 cume (a huge increase)--are the highest during all that time. (They're ahead of WPPZ, WUSL, and WPHI.) This has got to be confusing the "WIP-FM" issue!

WPPZ: 4.3 - 3.9 - 3.9 - 3.2 - 2.7. Yikes.

WUSL: Cume has plummeted to its lowest point in my records.

WPHI: Suffered a similar cume bust to WUSL. They haven't been this low since September 2008.

With reports that KTWV-94.7 in Los Angeles is about to drop smooth jazz at any moment (although as of this writing, 2:45 P.M. EST, November 4th, they are still programming a smooth jazz format), stunt with an all-Christmas format through December 25th (which means CBS Radio sister station KRTH-101.1 wouldn't be going all-Christmas this year), and then launch a new format after the Holidays, a question needs to be asked:

Is this the end of the smooth jazz format on "terrestrial" radio?

KTWV was the first station (as far as I know of) to adopt this format, back in 1987 (at the time, it was in more of a "new age" trapping). It's relative success led to stations in most major markets adopting something similar.

As for me, I thought "smooth" jazz had the potential to replace "beautiful music" as the soft music format of choice in the workplace, etc., etc.

But in the last couple of years, quite a few stations have bid "adios" to smooth jazz. And now the station that's considered the pioneer in the format could be just hours away from biding it farewell.

FYI: Prior to KTWV, 94.7 in Los Angeles was home to KMET, which flipped to "progressive" (later album) rock back in 1968, and had it's own illustrious history until it was suddenly "blown up" in February of 1987 to make way for "The Wave". Ironically, despite how fondly remembered KMET is among Southern Californians of a certain age, KTWV's smooth jazz format actually lasted longer than KMET's rock format did (a bit more than 22-and-a-half years for smooth jazz, as opposed to about 19 years for rock)

http://www.z1043.com Z-104.3 BALTIMORE-ANNAPOLIS http://www.z1043.com/mediaplayer/?station=WCHH-FM&action=listenlive&channel_title= 32 K AAC

Naturally I added it to the CHR/Pop webcasters list over on the CHR board.

So Baltimore finally gets it's own CHR- Z104.3.

They're using the same logo and voice as NY's Z100 and a pretty similar playlist. I'm guessing they'll be running Elvis Duran as well, although Hot 99.5's Kane is another possibility. I'm a little surprised they sound so current and decided to copy Z100 instead of the recurrent-heavy Hot 99.5. It's a good way to differentiate themselves from Hot AC/CHR hybrid Mix 106.5 though, since Mix tends to be slow on new hits.

I'm wondering how Mix 106.5 will react. Their music has gotten pretty rhythmic for a Hot AC, but they still play quite a few 90's golds and are missing a few of the big currents. Should be a good battle.

So KRTH-101.1 probably won't go all-Christmas.

I'm not sure when KOST-103.5 is going to flip, but the demise of KTWV-94.7 may well force KOST to flip sooner than planned, depending on when KTWV does so.

My guess: KNX-1070 or KFWB-980 will be simulcast on 94.7 come the first of the year.

Did the Feds' granting of channel 44 come with a condition that eventually channel 7 would be dropped? There's still an application listed for a low-power digital community station on 7 from a California company.

I'm not sure about that one. I thought WLS-TV was gonna operate a translator on channel 32. That isn't happenning now. I get both signals, but I get the strongest signal from channel 7 than from channel 44. If WLS-TV isn't vacating channel 7, then maybe Venture Technologies could put in for channel channel 32 or 26 (though WBBM already put in for 26, but hasn't mentioned if that's running or not).

When listening to the 1984 reunion clip, a great sounding audio production to hear the quality of "the voices" Jack mentions that this reunion was taped for the museum of broadcasting.I never heard that on any of the other reunions mentioned since this was the first one and not knowing at the time if there was going to be any others. There was a five year gap between the second one in 1989 then a lesser gap in the 90's 91,93,95 and finally 1998.I missed the 84 show but heard various clips here that were posted! I have various clips from 91,93 and the one I posted of Dean Anthony from 1998.Will post the others soon. Great clip to hear on this!

I'll bet in almost EVERY market, the Country station is #1 with 42-year-old women who smoke Reds! LOL. I'm thinkin there might be a bottle of Johnnie Walker around there someplace too!

WTTH didn't go to all Christmas - the Cape May County simulcast 93.1, WEZW did.
It's not streaming yet, and a web address hasn't been announced yet.

Any station can be "Arbitron Rated Number One" depends what demo and time frame you look at. It's fun to sit with Arbitron Maximizer and figure out ways to look good. I found a way to make Cat Country 107.3 in Atlantic City # 1 in New York City one time by narrowing it way down to something like "Women 42 years old from 11 to 11:15 PM that smoke Marlboro 100s" or some such.

Something similar happened here in Boston, where WHDH-7 moved it's digital broadcasts from channel 42 to channel 7.

In the end, WHDH went back to channel 42, but still "maps" as "7.1" on Boston-area TV sets.

Except that WLS-TV decided to have both the translator & the new main channel map to 7.1, 7.2, & 7.3, since they made channel 7 a translator. They wouldn't have sought a new channel if channel 7 wasn't an issue. I still say that most people who can have an outdoor antenna don't like old-fashioned element antenna , since they're big, and sometimes bulky (mainly Low VHF), and have UHF only antennas. Or in the case of my Aunt Dawn, she refuses to have an outdoor antenna, since she claims her town requires outdoor antennas to be mounted to the roof, which she doesn't like.

I don't know what WLS-TV would have done had channel 52 not been out of core. Since they didn't request a new channel earlier on, they were forced to go back to channel 7. I do know channel 52 didn't go out as far, partially due to WGVK Kalamazoo MI also being on channel 52, though it was a low power station at the time. I don't know if it was a Class A at the time or not. Based on the old coverage, vs the coverage of WGVK on channel 5, it looks like it was a low power station. So WLS-TV might have had to protect WGVK during the transition. From what I heard, WBBM-TV had fewer complaints from people not getting them on channel 12 than when they were on channel 3, though I was one of those who did get them on channel 3.

I heard a report (an apparently false report) that WTTH had gone all-Christmas. I went to the website and saw no such evidence so I clicked on the link to listen to the stream. The little window that popped up didn't identify the song playing, instead displaying "Arbitron Rated Number ONE!" I thought that was interesting since Equity used to try getting away with that on WAYV. Being a natural born radio geek, I wondered what WAYV's stream must say so I plugged in their website and brought up their player. Lo and behold, it also says "Arbitron Rated Number One!"

What an amazing feeling it must be to own two stations in the same market and have them both be #1. Bravo.
