I have XM at home and Sirius in my car. I should of never let the salesman talk me into Satellite on my new Taurus, I really wanted HD but he insisted it was no good and gave me a free Sirius lifetime membership, I should of taken the HD. I'm almost certain I heard her on B101 tonight. Two hours later, I'm hearing the voice of someone who is definitely a part-timer. So I go to the Google because that's what you do when you have a question. I look at B101's DJ's page and she's gone. In fact, there's no one listed from 8pm until the morning show. Now, I'm thinking, I'm pretty sure I saw her big old face on there the other day. So I go to the Google again. I decide to look for a cached version of the B101 DJ's page. And there's her big old face on the page, cached from just the day before yesterday. Don't get me wrong: I can't stand her show so it's not like I'm upset or anything. And it seems like that's what they've been doing since mid-October. After all, it's just an HD2 station (and now a web stream). It's not like it's their moneymaker or anything. However, call me crazy but it seems like after they did their little press release and sent out their Now 97.5 back-from-the-dead listener club e-mail today, their playlist is actually a little different. I listened on my way back from New Jersey (until I got into Philadelphia and the station became unlistenable) and, like I said I could but nutso here, but it sounded a bit more focused and current. Plus, I heard a version of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" by Sheryl Crow which I don't think I'd ever heard them play before. So on top of sounding tweaked, I think they actually added at least one song. What surprises me about this is that, if true, it means someone there is actually paying attention to what's on the HD2. After a year or two of a Classical format which it appeared they forgot was even broadcasting, it would be an impressive and welcome shift in strategy. Anywhoo... Maybe I just caught a particularly hotter-sounding hour of music and perhaps they've been playing that Sheryl Crow song all along. Greater Media Philadelphia Market Manager John Fullam says, "We had a great response to Christmas music last year on 97.5 FM. The people of Philadelphia really love Christmas music, so we thought we'd bring it back, all commercial-free on 97.5 FM HD2 and online for listeners to stream." That's from the news release they sent my TPM NewsPage. This happened to me before, after Sunny 104.5 passed away. A while later, I got an e-mail from them all dressed up like usual, as if nothing had ever happened. Spooky! Since Now 97.5 died, I've received two messages of the same ilk. The latest is telling me that Now 97.5 has moved to two new locations. (Apparently, this dead person has actually come back to life. Well, half-way.) The e-mail points out that it's on 97.5 HD2 and also online. Interestingly, the e-mail links you to the website of 95.7 BEN-FM, where you can click a button and launch a player which identifies itself as Now 97.5. Just a tiny bit convoluted. I still say: PUT IT ON 95.7 FM! I'm not entirely convinced WOGL's gonna do it but B101 is a sure bet. A week from today is the Friday before Thanksgiving. I suppose they could do it then but in this day and age, it doesn't seem like much of a splash to wait that long. If B101 flipped today, they'd likely force the hand of whoever else in town is considering doing it. But without someone forcing B's hand, I don't see that being even remotely possible. So hopefully (for people who like Christmas music), the other guys aren't sitting around with their fingers on the buttons waiting to see what B101 does. I think it makes the most sense for BEN-FM to do it first. That way, it's a surprise, word-of-mouth starts spreading, and people will hopefully remember that BEN-FM exists. They're not exactly sucking the air out of the market, but they certainly could use a little shot in the arm. They'd surely get higher ratings with it than sister 97.5 got with it last year. And 97.5's numbers weren't shabby. Ultimately, if no one flips today, I'm not sure I see much hope for anyone doing it before November 25.
