Joseph_Gallant on "Guess Who Was First With All-Christmas In Rhode Island??"

It wasn't WSNE-93.3 nor WWLI-105.1.

It was WWBB-101.1, which is usually an oldies (but playing little pre-1972 stuff nowadays) station and has heretofore not gone all-Christmas.

They did so at 12:01 A.M. EST today (Novemebr 5th).

Since WWBB is under the same ownership as WSNE, this means WSNE won't be going all-Christmas this year.

Although they haven't done so at this writing (2:30 P.M. EST), look for WWLI to flip before the weekend, perhaps even before the day is out.

Given that WWBB and not WSNE has gone all-Christmas, I wonder if "classic hits" will even be back at 101.5 after Christmas. I wouldn't be surprised if Clear Channel moves talk-formatted WHJJ from 920 AM to 101.5 FM. It would give 'HJJ a stronger signal, allow them to compete equally with WPRO-630 (which now simulcasts on WPRV-99.7), and might allow CC to flip 920 to ESPN Radio were they not to have an AM/FM talk simulcast.

Sorry to be so long writing....was over in Nome for a week or so doing the quarterly tower check and fixing a bunch of stuff...all volunteer work.

**** Wilcox did weekends in the 1950's and evenings for a time in the 1960's when they (WSAR) were old-line network (ABC) with "full service" programming. They went fulltime music sometime in the 1960's; I forget when. Truman Taylor (later of WTEV/WLNE news), then known as "Tru Taylor"....Art Shepard (later to Albany New York as Arny Shepard) and Bob Bassett (also later of WLKW with me and at WTEV when I shifted to engineering). **** did a lot of loose-ends stuff and then went on to study theology.

Never did any serious rock...
I recall WSAR-1480 being Top-40 in the 1970's. Was the station Top-40 back in the 1950's, during **** Wilcox's time there, or did that come later??

**** Wilcox who hosted music programming during the 1950's on WSAR, Fall River has died in New Hampshire. His age was not disclosed in his obituary but would likely have been around 79. Wilcox left radio and went on to become a clergyman and served in Fall River before moving to New Hampshire many years ago.

WSAR, at the time, was transitioning from old-line largely network programming (ABC) to an all music format.

Today (June 13th), the "Street Talk" section of Rasdio And Recrods.com's websiote (http://www.radioandrecords.com) is reporting that WSNE-93.3 is dropping the syndicated Delilah show and will replace it with the syndicated (but customizable) John Tsh show, and also pick-up Ryan Seacrest's syndicated show to fill afternoon drive (vacated by longtime New England radio personality David O'Leary earlier this year).

I don't think Delilah will be gone from Providence radio for long; I can actually see WWLI-105.1 drop Art Spencer's local "love songs" show and replace him with Delilah.

The reasons I think Spencer might be dropped and replaced with Delilah would be:

(1) WWLI is usually Providence's top-rated station. That would boost Delilah's total audience (by a thousand or so?), although WWLI is not owned by "Delilah"'s corporate parent Clear Channel whereas WSNE is.

(2) Delilah is a better fit for WWLI than WSNE because WWLI's music format is perfect for a show like Delilah's.

(3) And WWLI's owner, Citadel Broadcasting, has had financial problems and has had to make major layoffs across the country, including Providence. In Rhode Island, the entire staff of what was WSKO-AM/FM was fired and only one person hired to replace them----Bruce Palmer for afternoons on WPRV-790----with the rest of WPRV being the syndicated "True Oldies Channel" and Don Imus' morning show while WEAN-99.7 (formerly WSKO-FM) has become a 24/7 simulcast of WPRO-630.

This would give Citadel a chance to eliminate one more high-paid person.
As you probably know, the tower is owned by Citadel (Who's WPRO-FM is side mounted). 36 is still on the tower, and is until 02/17/09. 21 (36's digital) is on the WJAR 10 tower.
Will be interesting to see the physical design of the directional antenna. It might not look all that odd depending on how tight their pattern might have to be.

If it was , it would have looked like a standard FM directional with fairly larger directional elements.
OK....you're quick! No sooner had I "sent" the above and you edited yours making the whole WBRU thing moot. I'm still curious, though, about the "WEAN" site.....

Today hearing two different pirates on the air.

103.1 one from East Providence that has been around for ages. Sounding good playing jazz. Nice format.

107.7, extremley over modulated (causing bad frequency deviation and bleeding into 107.9 from Boston) foreign language pirate, I believe to be in Pawtucket. The signal is very strong from this one, I was able to hear it in Rehoboth.

Also in Providence, I was hearing Sports on 107.1 today, which Ive also heard in Seekonk as well. Not sure what that is...

Ahh well they were on 790, sorta. The game was rained out but they were there.

And during the daytime, I would think 790 has the better signal because it is slightly higher in the band and thus less suseptible to noise.

The 790 night pattern favors Bristol and Plymouth counties well, but 880 at night is city grade here anyways, so it's moot.

Oh and Joseph...
The Yankees WIN... Thheeeeee Yankees WIIINNN!! =)
