Since there is no specific television board for Milwaukee or Wisconsin, I'm posting this message on this board.

WITI-6 is about to "suspend" most of it's local weekend newscasts. Weekend morning and early-evening newscasts will be affected.

The change is due to take effect the weekend of April 4th-5th.
For anyone interested, I'll be talking about my book, MILWAUKEE TELEVISION HISTORY: THE ANALOG YEARS, on WUWM's "Lake Effect" Thursday morning. The show airs at 10:00 a.m. and repeats at 11:00 p.m. It's also available for download online the day it airs.

I've been informed that the book will receive the Gambrinus Prize from the Milwaukee County Historical Society. Named for the god of brewing, the Gambrinus Prize is awarded each year for the best book-length contribution to Milwaukee historiography. I'll accept it at the society's annual awards dinner next month.

I'll be speaking at the central (downtown) Milwaukee Public Library this coming Saturday, 14 February at 2:30 in the afternoon as a part of their "Authors' Series." It all takes place in Meeting Room 1, which is to the right of the rotunda as you walk into the library from Wisconsin Ave. Light refreshments will be served.

I'll speak for about 30 minutes, and then open things up for Q&A.

A representative from my publisher, the Marquette University Press, will be there to sell copies of my book: Milwaukee Television History: The Analog Years, and I'll sign them after the presentation. If you've bought a copy elsewhere, bring it along, and I'll be happy to sign it for you!

To promote the appearance, I'll be making an appearance on "Fox Six Wake Up" this coming Wednesday morning, 11 February, at around 08:40.

Hopefully, we'll see a few of you there!

I'm going to be the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Milwaukee Area Radio Enthusiasts (MARE) on Sunday, 11/16.

I know it's Packer-Bear game day. I didn't realize that when I accepted the invitation, but am happy to speak anyway.

I'll be discussing local broadcasting history, my forthcoming book on Milwaukee TV history, and perhaps look into my crystal ball.

The meeting starts at 2:00 p.m. in the community room, G-110, in Mayfair Mall. Once in the mall go to the Garden Suites East and take either the stairs or the elevator downstairs. G-110 is in the basement of the suites.

Perhaps we'll see a few of you there. I promise not to have an earphone with the game!

WAUK had three towers when I was the CE there from 1965 to 1968. The guy wires were cut, and the third tower was allowed to drop back in 1965 or 1966. That's about the simplest way to change a tower light...

Quote:

One more tid bit-- Richard V. Steffen passed away recently. He, along with his wife Lois, bought WMKE which was one of the newer FM's in the second surge in the '60's. (Probably about three
years after it came on the air with the original owners-- because of the FCC transfer of ownership regulations at the time.) Anyhow, the original xmitter location was atop a building somewhere on
Michigan Avenue in downtown Milaukee. Maybe the building is gone, because I can't spot anything familiar. **** Steffen moved the transmitter/antenna from this Michigan Avenue location to his new store location at 55 th and North Avenue. Then, later, the station was sold to the owner
of WAWA (AM).

While the Steffen's ran the FM, Lois had a nightly concert of piano and/or electronic organ music. She had quite a music background.

I vaguely still remember the old WAWA-FM site at 55th and North Avenue back around 1966 or so. I helped out when they would be short-handed at WAWA and would get a call to go there and help that day. Working there back then meant that I was employed by three separate radio-station employers simultaneously.

There was an old piano in that large room that housed the board, transmitter, et al. I thought the place was a verifiable dump. I was trying to place in my mind a couple months ago where exactly that place was. [I knew it was somewhere a bit east of 60th on the south side of North Avenue.]

Most of the WAWA-FM programming was loud black religious brokerage programs where the mostly, if not all, fake ministers would hawk expensive Bibles and such whenever any listeners would call in. They were referred to as being brother this or sister that...

There was this guy who would have an hour of brokered German programming--Louie something, I think. One of those black preachers there went by the name of W. D. Patterson. It was rumored that he was illiterate, so he would have others read Bible verses for him. So, I would oblige him occasionally while running the board.

Anyway, the German guy told me on occasion that there was nothing worse than smelling a Patterson fart. So, he would light up a cigar or two to clean up the smell. And sometimes, the German guy would be late, and I would have to do his program until he got there, either on North or afterwards when WAWA-FM moved out to the AM site on Blue Mound.
