I think its funny how the same people want more markets metered by Nielsen (for TV, obviously), but feel that metering radio is anathema. I don't get it.

It could be a general opposition to the granularity that the meter allows. I know if I were a jock or PD I wouldn't want to deal with studies like one done in Houston which indicated that an artist interview actually lost the station listeners by looking at minute-by-minute data.

When PPM technology was first explained, I knew that a lot of niche stations weren't going to like it because of...well, because of the accuracy. I don't think it's ever been a secret that diary-holders don't faithfully "record listening" so much as they "vote for their favorite stations." And I believe it's always been common knowledge that diary-holders write in their favorite stations and credit them with vast stretches of listening that don't actually occur. (I thought everyone always knew that these vast stretches are in all likelihood interrupted by hours when the radio is off, when the diary-holder is nowhere near a radio, or when the diary-holder is listening to some entirely different station.) Of course electronic measurement would reveal the truth: That a lot of stations never were getting as much time spent listening as the diaries would have one believe.

I suspected (and I believe I mentioned it on these discussion boards) that this would have a particularly harsh (though accurate) impact on minority-skewing stations. Or as they are now called, "minority-owned" stations. (As if identity or ethnicity of the owner should have something to do with the measurement of its audience?)

When the reality of electronic measurement hit, I never understood why it surprised anyone, nor why people think Arbitron should adjust things so certain stations can once again enjoy inaccurately inflated time spent listening estimates. I also never quite got why no one else seemed to be articulating what I had been saying all along. Today, I finally came across someone who is making the same point I kept trying to make. And he is a former Arbitron executive.

He was talking about how Radio One grabbed the bull by the horns and proactively helped themselves (novel concept, no?) when the reality of PPM came to light in Houston. He said, “I happened to follow Jenny Tsao, the Arbitron trainer, when the sales and management staff for Radio One in Houston saw their first PPM data. The diary slide in particular that caught my attention was the one that showed someone listening from 6am to Midnight with that infamous ‘line’ drawn right down the page. We have seen that countless times with the diary, but this kind of excessive listening does not exist with PPM. It is nearly impossible to find someone listening to radio for 18 uninterrupted hours in the PPM service. People may ‘vote’ for their favorite station that way, but passive electronic measurement does not indicate that it exists. While not all of the listening is that kind, in black and Hispanic diaries across all markets, anyone who has looked at diaries at Arbitron (I have personally reviewed about 40,000) knows that those kind of diaries did and do exist. But it's not reality. This drop in ‘reported’ TSL in the diary versus what is picked up in PPM is the root cause of the drop. Most stations see the cume increases, but it's the TSL drop that causes the change in rank - unless you do something about it, as Radio One obviously has done very successfully in Houston for the past year and a half.”

To update when happened on Boston radio since I began this thread early Tghursday evening (June 25th):

On Thursday and Friday (June 26th) nights, the "Nightside" talk show on WBZ-1030 (hosted by Dan Rea) devoted just about the entire show to Jackson both nights.

On Thursday, former Boston Herald arts writer Dean Johnson and veteran Boston radio personality J.J. Wright (who now works at sister station WODS-103.3 and was in fact on the air there when news of Jackson's heart attack and then death broke) were guests.

Much of the local talk programming Friday on WTKK-96.9 was also devoted to Jackson, although on Friday morning, host Michael Graham played back extensive excerpts of Martin Bashir's interview with Jackson a few years back that intensify a controversy about Jackson's behavoir that dogged him until his death.

WODS-103.3 remained "All-Michael-Jackson-And-The-Jacksons-All-The-Time" through 12 Midnight EDT last night, based on station playlists published on Yes.com.

And several other music stations continued to sprinkle Jackson songs into their playlists.

But classic hits WROR-105.7, which I thought might have played some Michael Jackson music, didn't seem to (according to Yes.com).

Our own E Gill CVI was kind enough to let us know what Philadelphia stations did; please feel free to share information on how radio stations in your area reacted to the news.

On my way home from work, I scanned the dial in Philadelphia and Michael Jackson songs were playing on thirteen stations simultaneously.

Off the top of my head, I heard consecutive MJ songs on Rowan's radio station, WBEN, WOGL, WPHI, WIOQ, WDAS, WISX, and WRNB.

Rock stations WMMR and WRFF both broke format around 6:30 to play Michael Jackson tracks.

Check out yes.com. Type in Michael Jackson and watch the screen flying by. They can barely keep up with all the MJ spins occurring right now across the country.

Since this post regards a number of different formats and (in time) several different markets, I have started the thread on this board.

After today's (June 25th) death of Michael Jackson of an apparent heart attack (his death first reported by the gossip website TMZ.com around 5:20 P.M. EDT; confirmation coming from both the AP and the Los Angeles Times at about 6:30 P.M. EDT), a number of radio stations have begun playing some of his records.

I'll run down what's going on in my hometown of Boston as of 7:30 P.M. EDT via what I've heard on-air and from playlists posted on Yes.com:

* WODS-103.3 (oldies) has been playing Jackson music (including some early hits with his brothers as The Jackson 5/The Jacksons) continuously since 6:18 P.M. EDT. They are also playing cuts from his "Thriller" album (released 1983) seldom played on a station with such a format.

* WROR-105.7 (classic hits) hasn't (at this writing) played any Michael Jackson since the news of his hospitalization (never mind his death) broke.

* WXKS-107.9 (top-40/CHR) has been playing Michael Jackson songs saince 6:59 P.M. EDT. WXKS (branded as "Kiss-108") has been a top-40 station since the early 1980's (after evolving from a disco format), and Jackson's music has been a big part of the station's programming since flipping to disco from beautiful music in 1979.

* WMJX-106.7 (adult contemopoary) played three straight Jackson songs from 6:29 to aproximately 6:42 P.M. EDT, likely after news of his death was confirmed by the AP.

* WBMX-98.5 (hot adult contemporary) played "Beat It!" at 6:26 P.M. EDT, then didn't play another Jackson song until 7:05 P.M. EDT, and has (at this writing) been playing nothing but Michael Jackson music since.

* WMKK-93.7 (variety hits) has played a couple of Jackson songs since news of his death broke.

Although his music was the kind that normally wouldn't be played on active, alternative, or classic rock formats, I thought that some stations in those formats might play "Beat It!" (from "Thriller"), given it has a memorable guitar solo by Eddie Van Halen. But at least here in Boston, that hasn't taken place (yet).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How has radio reacted in your area?? What stations have gone All-Michael-Jackson-All-The-Time??

Please post responses on how radio stations in your area are reacting and what they're doing. Thank you in advance.

I've asked this question before but I've totally forgotten the answer. In markets with a regular old analog channel 6 (like WPVI here in Philadelphia), after the transition, they will no longer be transmitting on the signal, right? So does 87.7 FM become available so someone can do an LPTV and create a "radio" station there? I was told no...but I don't remember exactly why.

I'm still trying to figure out the new boards system here, so forgive me if I missed it somewhere else. I didn't see anything on the demise of R&R anywhere else, and I'm not sure how it fits in ... so I figured this was the safest place so I don't risk posting this in the wrong place.

I'm guessing by the time anyone sees this, they'll know about Radio & Records shutting down -- if they care. I was shocked when I saw the news of this June 3.

But this is not to report the item. If any missed R&R's final front page with their own announcement of their demise, I got a screenshot of it. Here's the link to view it:
