I wonder if the wave of FM stations going talk is a response to the very chance that radio stations may be soon charged fees for playing music that artists recording songs would receive.

Such high fees may force many stations out of music formats altogether.

IT seems that WHLD will flip to become a talk radio station to compete against WBEN and WECK. Unlike WECK and WLVL WHLD has a better signal and will take on more successful shows. The flip will come in January. I'll secretly share the schedule here:

5AM-6AM: Wall Street Journal This Morning
6AM-9AM: Buffalo This Morning; hosts TBA
9AM-12PM: Glenn Beck
12PM-2PM: Fred Thompson
2PM-4PM: Joe Scarborough show from WABC
4PM-6PM: Buffalo This Afternoon; hosts TBA
6PM-9PM: Mark Levin
9PM-12AM: Michael Savage
12AM-3AM: Curtis Sliwa
3AM-5AM: Roy Masters

Weekends will feature a special editions of our new afternoon show along with brokered programming and local home&garden shows including a two hour show sponsored by Wegmans Food Markets airing Saturday mornings from 9-11AM. Stay tuned for more!

1)A lot of stations are downsizing in a way that's clearly hurting them. WBEN in Buffalo comes to mind...it's no coincidence that as soon as they dump a popular local host for a syndicated national one spouting the same-old, same-old, they lose their #1 position.

2)Stations that still try to be live, local and connected to their target audience in all dayparts do well. WDKX in Rochester comes to mind. With one of the weakest signals in the metro, they dominate 12-34 and came in #2 overall in the most recent book. If they had a full-market-coverage class B signal they'd clearly be a dominant #1. As it is they're one of the strongest stations in town where it counts...

There are object lessons here. Wonder if TPTB will get them, and act on them...

I could have told them that.

There was a discussion about this quite some time ago, and the thinking by many of us here at the time was "It's better to spend $500 to make $600 than it is to only spend $5 to make $6.
And since we last met our protagonists...

Wease has made his appearance on Fox 95.1 with a new morning show that picked up where his old one left off, and essentially picked up all his old core audience as well, leaving Fox in a much stronger position than before and leaving WCMF in significant trouble--well down from its old Wease-era numbers in most dayparts (although afternoons seem to be holding up, probably thanks to Brian Robinson).

PXY has been less seriously hurt by the changes it's been through, although its lead over Kiss 106.7 can't be called all that comfortable at this stage. PXY and Kiss really are both secondary players for the 12-34 audience, both city and suburbam, since WDKX is reigning king of the younger demos in a way that cuts across ethnic lines with young listeners like no station since WBBF in the pre-1970 era.

Warm 101.3? Not the same strong competitor it used to be.

As the market turns...

It depends on the market and the morning show.
A really good example of a mistake has to be when CHFI in Toronto decided to fire their morning show of Bob and Erin.

Erin Davis went to EZ rock and CHFI's ratings went from a 10 or 11 share down to a 5.7!!

However, it's also different in the States. In Canada you're only allowed to own two AM and Two FM in a market, so the chances of being picked up by someone else is also greatly increased.

Erin Davis has since been rehired on CHFI and, hopefully they've learned from their mistakes!

***an added note: The excuse for CHFI wasn't about saving money, but instead to try and go after a younger audience, but still...

If it ain't broke...DON'T FIX IT!!

Since last we discussed this here, Kane is literally back to his old daypart at CMF plus getting the PD's responsibilities.

Pete Kennedy moved over to Buzz 98.9 for middays so he's also back collecting an Entercom paycheck.

Dee Alexander got dropped from Warm 101's mornings when the station was spun off to Stephens Media, but she remains under contract to Entercom and collecting $$ while they work on finding a place for her somewhere in the cluster of stations they kept (there are several possible places and dayparts where she'd do well).

And Wease waits for his noncompete to run out late this summer or early in the fall so he can start his new morning show on the Fox 95.1--which, in an odd coincidence, will originate from what used to be his former studio in the old CBS radio complex in the HSBC tower, which is where Clear Channel is moving this fall when the start knocking Midtown Plaza down. What goes around, comes around....

But at the same time, the first ratings for all these changes have come out, and CMF took a major hit from the loss of Wease if you judge by the 12+ numbers--by far the worst they've seen since before Wease started doing mornings there almost two decades ago. No other station hit by the changes has shown damage yet, although the breakup of the Warm 101 morning show is still too recent to be reflected in any of the published 12+ quarterly numbers (for some reason the monthly trends are embargoed in the Rochester market, though not in Buffalo). But the lesson from both CMF and Warm could turn out to be, blowing up your morning show to save a little cash could end up being a very expensive mistake before long...we shall see...

Couple things happening...first, a lot of the Western NY traffic wound up on the Radio-Info site, and second, the changes that our markets are going through these days are by and large changes that involve downsizing of people, downsizing of personality and downsizing of programming choices. Not a direction that creates the kind of excitement that makes people rush to their keyboards and post.

Face it, folks, a lot of the thrill is gone from radio these days even for those of us who make our living in it. More and more posts seem to wax nostalgic for earlier days--mostly the 1960s and 1970s when many of us started getting interested enough in the business to contemplate making a living in it. (Most young people coming out of college these days probably can't count on a good opportunity with a living wage in radio anyway, and opt either for television or for some other field entirely.)
