I was flipping through the channels on the 202 and heard an oldie on 95.9. Later on in the afternoon, I heard all-Spanish. La Nueva 95.9. I tihkn they have upped their power too as it was bleeding over to the barely audible KLPX (I'm in Mesa). New fringe station, or no more Cloud? Anyone know?

How did Tim and Willy do when they filled in on morning drive? How come they didn't get a regular gig?

I still can't understand why anyone in the day and age of corporate radio would turn down a two year contract, just because you wanted a three year contract. Sure beats not working!

Yes, KKFR's management would not give a flip about Prescott/Sedona, but the northern rimshot may be what KEDJ needs, after all, it was originally on 106.3 in the NW Valley before they were booted when that was sold to Univision, and the western half of the Valley may have been where its listener base was.

Riviera has a rimshot in Las Vegas they flipped from urban AC to alternative, Area 108, and it seems to hold its own in the books there against a more full-market alternative station although the owners before Riviera had that were denied a closer move by the FCC because the proposed COL was nothing more than a boat dock and some tourist trailers.

I think Riviera is going to reshuffle its deck in Phoenix simply because the CHR/Rhythmic is doing well and would do better on 103.9 being the closer rimshot. It's probably the Alternative format be damned in this case.

JamesAnderson wrote on Fri, 15 February 2008 10:31

If KEDJ Gilbert/Phoenix flipped, I think it would be a format swap with 98.3, turns out 102.9 in Sedona is doing a rhythmic-leaning CHR/Pop format in the Prescott/Sedona area, so that might explain why they might want to put KKFR on 103.9 and move KEDJ to 98.3.

But that would not be the first time that 103.9 had a CHR/Rhythmic format, they did that in 1996 after flopping with the 'Blaze' CHR/rock format.

Irony: the general manager at KZON now was the general manager of 103.9 KPTY when it was making a run at rhythmic CHR and was crushed by KKFR at 92.3, programmed by Bruce St. James. So now you have Bruce at a rimshot going up against Mark Waters at the full market signal FM. What goes around comes around.

I don't care what rimshot you put KKFR on, it's not going to dominate like it did when it had a full market signal. I'm impressed that it's doing as well as it is, but it's still not going to bill what it did on South Mountain or get the numbers it used to pull. The CHR revenue is going to go to KZZP and KZON and KKFR will get what's left.

I guarantee you that the management of KKFR doesn't give a rats **** what's going on in the Sedona or Prescott market. That's not where they make their money.

I don't get the breakouts for Phoenix, so I'll ask: who does KVIB hurt? (if anyone) Who do they share audience with? CHR or Spanish-language stations?

I'm with you, James... KTAR now sounds like a poor clone of KFYI. Mac Watson tries, but there's just too much biz between the spot load, traffic reports, and all the other features to try and keep some continuity on the talk portion. It's not Mac's fault.

Besides, I'd actually sit through all the spots waiting for the next block of news back when they were doing it right by me..now I don't.

Today I listen to the music stations if I'm out in traffic...and Detour Dan on The Peak fits the bill nicely...

I'd really like an update on what's been going on during the day while I was away...I'm hoping Mr. Hill comes to his senses and realizes that "live" and "local" wins. This steady diet of nothing but politics, immigration and shouting is beginning to smell...

What's Russ smoking then? He came from a station that has a news block in the PM drive and it reels in ratings like you would not believe, the Fall Book had it at the top of the heap of all stations.

He's being hypicritical to think that talk in afternoon drive will work. It doesn't, not when you have KJZZ right next to it doing long-form news, and not alot of local content other than some hard news, traffic, and the occasional feature, when KTAR could really hit with the hard news and steal ratings from just about everyone else.

I could see KTAR returning to its heritage position at the top of the ratings if they added the afternoon drive news block back in and running the block properly right from the start.

The main manager there came from KSL-AM-FM/Salt Lake a year ago and still hasn't figured out that Phoenix needs an afternoon drive news block, that would kill just about everybody else in the Phoenix news/talk market. That has worked for KSL for nearly 20 years now.

If a news block were added, say 4-7pm as well as being sure the morning news went from 5-9am, with a noon hour block (shifting Glenn Beck to 1-4pm, they could be a top-5 player in the ratings, possibly number 2 or number 1 even in the 12+.

103.9 started as KQEZ/Coolidge in December 1980 with a B/EZ format, went through other formats and calls, then decided to upgrade class and rimshot Phoenix in the 90s.
