Since there is no longer a specific message board for local TV in Los Angeles or California, I'm posting this message here.

Former KYW-3 Philadelphia co-anchor Alycia Lane (whose final days at KYW read like a soap opera; she has a suit pending against her former employers) has found a new job on the other side of the continent: She'll be weekend anchor (and reporter three days a week) for KNBC-4 Los Angeles.

KNBC press release: http://nbcumv.com/release_detail.nbc/nbcownedaffiliatedstations-2009818104635-alycialanejoinskn.html

According to the press release, Lane worked at NBC-owned WTVJ-6 in Miami before moving to Philly, so she'll once again be at an NBC O&O.

jomoontheradio on "Will FM Hot Talk Ever See A Return in LA?"

The reason Tom Leykis said KLSX went off the air was because of financial reasons and demographic reasons. KLSX had good demos in Men 18-43 for certain shows (like Tom Leykis) and remained strong for almost 10 years. Do you think FM Hot Talk will ever return in LA? Before the recession's over? After the recession's over? Which station would be willing to carry Hot Talk and what do you think of the projects ex-KLSX personalities are doing?

Rick Dees is out of KMVN and is focusing on launching his online Top 40 radio station. What do you think? Will it be a success? From what I've seen so far is that the station is not like many other internet radio stations, the station actually has on-air talent, celebrity guests and on-air contests that don't just give away concert tickets, they give away BIG on-air prizes (like vacations, bills paid, $50,000, etc...) Do you think the format will be picked up by a willing terrestrial radio?

NO SURPRISE HERE!
People had been talking about a flip for years and this one seems to benefit Emmis a little more than just flipping it themselves. They would make $159 million dollars with the sale even if Radio Centro exits! During these times, these profits are crucial. Yes, the station could OBVIOUSLY make even more if they keep KMVN and wait for advertising revenues to pop back up but look, if Emmis wanted to re-enter LA with another station, it would just take a purchase of another struggling station just like Bonneville with KSWD.

It seems like this year is the year for Format Flips in LA! KDLD, KLSX, KMVN...what next?
Let's have a little fun on what station will flip after KMVN's flip on Wednesday, what station and what will it flip to. Try to provide some evidence on why also.

I don't think anyone is catching on to AAA in LA. I know it's only been a year but if Bonneville bought the station for millions of dollars, don't you think they'd want some money back as soon as possible from the purchase? Don't believe me wrong, there is growth at KSWD especially with the departure of Indie 103.1 and 97.1 FM Talk (2 audiences that are targeted by KSWD), but the growth is going way to slow to believe that the format will make money. Similar to the Emmis move with "Movin'", it was only three years after Emmis realized that "Movin'" didn't make any money! There was growth at the station, in fact the audience increased by the thousands before the sale of the LMA to Radio Centro but when something isn't making enough progress, it's time to cut it. The only reason KSWD would have an increase of ratings over the course of the next few years would be if KROQ and KYSR went off the air or starting doing something really wrong or if KSWD went more mainstream with an alternative format. Sad to say, but if you're not mainstream in LA, you're done. Stations that play less mainstream music end up like Pirate Radio, Indie or even Movin. Stations make more revenue in Los Angeles than any other market in the US according to the recent report by Radio & Records and how many people out of a crowd would rather hear or even download Humble Pie, The Fixx and Steve Miller Band than more mainstream artists like The Killers, Fall Out Boy, Coldplay and Linkin Park in LOS ANGELES?
Home of 47% of the audience being a minority Latino or Black. It's nice to be different and cater to a different type of audience but not in LA, Bonneville. People don't like that stuff in LA. Just look at why KIIS doesn't play rock music in their Top 40 station and why every other station is flipping to Spanish. Bonneville should focus more on positioning its station along in the alternative rock war of KROQ and KYSR or another format. Hey! LA only has one straight up adult contemporary format that has a 3.7-7.2 share of the audience throughout the year, why not try to snag some revenue from that station just like KLSX flipped to steal some revenue from KIIS or like KYSR tried to snag some revenue from KROQ?

Emmis has signed a local marketing agreement with Mexican radio company Grupo Radio Centro, which will take over programming and ad sales on KMVN/Los Angeles, currently rhythmic AC as "MOViN 93.9," starting April 15
Call letters do not matter anymore in markets that are now on PPM rather than diaries.

It's simply not worth CBS paying off a LPFM broadcaster in Alaska just to get call letters that will be buried out of a stopset once per hour.

For that matter, KCBS-FM has been both "Arrow 93" and "Jack FM" without the need for CBS to change the call letters.

And let us also consider that KSCA kept its call letters when it switched from English AAA to Spanish Regional Mexican as "La Nueva" ... 15 years ago. Doesn't seem to have hurt their ratings (they've been #1 in the L.A. book several times). KXOL morphed from "El Sol" to "Latino 96.3" without a call letter change.

How about all those years back in the 80s that KIQQ (call letters originally chosen to match "K-100") was "K-Lite" without a call letter change?

96.7 in Santa Ana still has the call letters it signed on with back in the 60s (KWIZ-FM) but has been through about a dozen format changes ... half of which have been since it went Spanish language.

Indie 103.1 was KDLD/KDLE, calls chosen for its previous Dance format as "KDL", and still has those calls as "El Gato". Its sister station KLYY (97.5) in the Inland Empire has been through three formats since those calls were transferred from 107.1 and the calls remain.

"La Raza 97.9" has the call letters KLAX, from its previous format as "La X".

Honestly, I think the FCC should follow the lead of so many other countries and not require call letters to be required in a mandatory "legal ID". They really aren't necessary in this day and age.
