Nice! Tallgrass was, for all intents and purposes, pretty bad for that cluster. I was told the company couldn't get its financing in order due to the massive credit crunch.

The Pittsburg/Joplin cluster sounds much better now that SEK is back running it. I got a chance to give KEKS a bit of a listen as I was driving to and from Austin. It sounded okay, but I was really shocked to find the former CHR powerhouse KFFX running "Today's Best Hits." It sounded like a 24/7 satellite operation, and I thought that was really sad.

Listening to KISS 103.1 now.. Sounds CHR to me..

KKOY (Sunny 105.5) is sounding pretty CHR too. Listened to it on my way to Emporia today.

I called KKOY and asked the jock what happened to Tallgrass Broadcasting and he said they called the lawn mowing crew in to take care of that problem.

Is it back to calling itself "Kiss 103.1," or is it using "Tallgrass Rocks" but airing CHR? The playlist is definitely CHR, but the Emporia stations aren't streaming yet. I noticed Tallgrass flipped KKOY-FM 105.5 in Chanute back to Sunny 105.5 after being "Tallgrass Rock" for at least a little while. However, its playlist really didn't change much from when it was first Sunny 105.5.

Looks like it's still CHR, though a CHR/Pop now.

When the Rhythmic thing was talked about, I didn't even believe a rural Kansas area could support one and I was right.

Kent on "Say goodbye to KSJM/Wichita"

I can understand why they're dumping the format on KSJM since it really didn't work. However, I don't know how they think they're going to compete with 1070 The Ranch and Classic Country 92.3 with a satellite format and a rimshot signal.

The biggest problem they have is that station isn't a Wichita signal, and, while it will be upgrading and getting better, it won't citygrade more than half of Wichita after the upgrade. Although a lot of Kansas stations travel further than their signal parameters indicate they should, that rule doesn't apply too well in Wichita. KYQQ used to make the Tulsa Arbitrons, and I had no trouble getting it from Burlington, CO to past Salina when travelling between Denver and Kansas City. However, it's marginal at best in Wichita.

By the way, your comment on tornado chasing may be more accurate than you had intended. I remember reading that approximately 20% of Weather Channel viewers watch for 5 or more hours per day and, of that 20%, roughly 80% were in the Wichita TV market!

As if Wichita needed a 5th country station, gee, really adds to the whole "Kansas is boring" punch.

No wonder their entire tourism industry is based on Tornado chasing
