I wonder if anyone will take a chance and pick up the alt.rock baton.

I don't think 100.7 is setting the world on fire.

Excellent analysis, Aaron.
The new Z-104.3 sounds great!

http://www.z1043.com Z-104.3 BALTIMORE-ANNAPOLIS http://www.z1043.com/mediaplayer/?station=WCHH-FM&action=listenlive&channel_title= 32 K AAC

Naturally I added it to the CHR/Pop webcasters list over on the CHR board.

So Baltimore finally gets it's own CHR- Z104.3.

They're using the same logo and voice as NY's Z100 and a pretty similar playlist. I'm guessing they'll be running Elvis Duran as well, although Hot 99.5's Kane is another possibility. I'm a little surprised they sound so current and decided to copy Z100 instead of the recurrent-heavy Hot 99.5. It's a good way to differentiate themselves from Hot AC/CHR hybrid Mix 106.5 though, since Mix tends to be slow on new hits.

I'm wondering how Mix 106.5 will react. Their music has gotten pretty rhythmic for a Hot AC, but they still play quite a few 90's golds and are missing a few of the big currents. Should be a good battle.

It just occurred to me that, if you count the HD stations (I know no one does) and the out-of-market stations, Baltimore now has 4 outlets for Alternative music:

104.3
101.1 (from DC)
97.9 HD3 - Indie 97.9
105.7 HD2 - HFS2

... and of course 98 Rock plays quite a bit of Alternative as well, as do AAAs WTMD and WRNR. So do DC's AAA 94.7 The Globe and Worton's WKHS (mostly a simulcast of AAA WXPN from Philadelphia).

I'd say if you've got an HD Radio in Baltimore, you're in Alternative heaven- 4 Alternatives, 4 AAAs, and an Active Rocker. Does any other city even compare?

On a related note, it's a shame CBS can't simulcast HFS2 on one of its HD stations in DC. I guess it's an HD Radio Alliance duplication issue, since DC101 is already doing Alternative on its HD1 and its HD2.

No doubt Alternative isn't going for exactly the same demos as Active Rock, but there's still a lot of overlap.

When an Alternative debuts, the Active Rock stations hurt. When an Alternative dies, the Active Rock stations are helped. We've seen this before:

In Baltimore/Washington, when 99.1 HFS was canned, 98 Rock had a nice spike.

In Philly, when Y100 was destroyed, MMR shot up into the top 10. Then when Radio 104.5 debuted, WMMR was the station that got hurt the most.

As to the other point, yeah, Alt. is still lower-budget than CHR, but CC has low-budget CHR down to a science with all the Kiss-FMs out there. They've taken CHRs from worst to first on a shoestring budget (Cincinnati, Harrisburg). They could have attempted the same thing in Baltimore but I guess they thought Alt. was the safer choice.

They seem to be targeting the old HFS audience, which isn't an awful idea. HFS certainly did have some success with a similar formula (DC-based morning show, lean to the soft side of the Alt. spectrum).

In the end, Channel will probably do OK as a modern rocker, assuming 105.7 eventually flips to some other format (back to Oldies maybe?). I just feel the potential was greater with a CHR.

I beg to differ. Alternative really isn't going after active rock at all. The alternative format is a fairly split format, if done as a pure alternative, to about 60% males, 40% females. It is a fairly easy format to program, due to the fact that it doesn't play both hip hop/rap with pop and rock on a CHR. A CHR would need more of a budget, as well. Alternative, while it needs a good promotional budget, won't require as much as CHR. It almost looks like they want to get into Washington DC as well, seeing the construction permit they have for the station.

Just my 2 cents...

They went Alternative, Channel 104.3.

Bad move I think.

They could have gone CHR and filled the huge hole between 92Q and Mix 106.5. Seriously, there's no one in Baltimore aiming at young white women who want current music, not even a Rhythmic. 92Q is straight-up Urban, while Mix 106.5 is mostly stale recurrents from the past year. There was a huge hole to do some kickass CHR. They could have done it on the cheap too, just simulcast Kane from DC for mornings and get some of the other Hot 99.5 crew to VT middays and nights.

Look at the Baltimore ratings. Compare the total audience for 92Q and Mix 106.5 with the total audience for 98 Rock and HFS. Tell me which one you'd rather have a piece of. The Baltimore market can't really fit another young white male-targeted station. The only way Channel succeeds, especially in mornings, is if HFS goes away. You won't see KMS, Mickey and Amelia, and Elliott all at the top of the ratings... something has to give.

Not to mention that 98 Rock is one of the best sounding Active Rockers in the country. If I were going to go up against a station, I'd much rather go head-to-head with a confused Mix 106.5 than a focused, big-budget 98 Rock.

The station will simulcast Elliott in the Morning from sister DC101 in Washington. Listen to the launch at the Format Change Archive. http://www.formatchange.com/wsmj-baltim ... -channel-1 043/

The Memorial Day Weekend is usually busy with format flips across the country and we’re expecting a few this year. The first domino to fall should be in Baltimore where we’ve long expected Smooth Jazz 104.3 WSMJ to find a new format. The logo above appeared on the Clear Channel servers this evening, while Channel1043.com was registered on May 16. In addition, WSMJ PD/middayer Lori Lewis was let go on Thursday.

Clear Channel mainly uses the “Channel” moniker on CHR and Modern Rock stations, niether format currently appears on a Baltimore based-signal, however are both run by sister stations in neighboring Washington, D.C.. The logo variation is the same as used by Clear Channel Modern Rockers in Philadelphia, Columbus, and Grand Rapids among others.
