Update: As of 9 A.M. EST this morning (December 13th), WVNE-760 was back on the air (with what appears to be their normal 25,000-watt daytime signal as received at my location). WCRN-830 was still off the air.

For a time this morning (December 12th), both WVNE-760 and WCRN-830 were off the air.

The two stations, both of which have their transmitters just west of Worcester, were likely victims of the major ice storm that struck interior New England last night and this morning.

BTW, they are the two most powerful AM signals in Central Massachusetts: WVNE is a 25-kilowatt daytimer (8,600 watts during "critical hours"). while WCRN is 50,000 watts both day and night.

Entercom (should) BUY WCRN and make it WRKO 830

I could see Entercom buying WCRN-830, but if they do, I don't think it would become a simulcast (or partial simulcast, as I will note below) of WRKO-680 in Boston.

I think 830 would more likely become the new home of WVEI, so fans in Worcester County and Metrowest would have a strong signal for the Red Sox and Celtics (along with the "WEEI Sports Radio Network").

As for the current home of WVEI at 1440, I could see that become "WRAO" (if those calls are available) and become a partial simulcast of WRKO-680 (Finneran, Hopkins, Carr) with different syndicated programs and/or WCRN holdovers filling hours when WRKO is carrying a show that couldn't air in Worcester because WTAG-580 has rights to them in that market (i.e. Rush Limbaugh, George Noory).

WCRN pulls plug on Hank Stolz Show after another lackluster ratings period... He's now running the board for Peter Blute and also Drew Mortgage and Diane Williamson shows from 12-3pm. Howie Carr is back on 3-7pm. Another sign of financial woes - WCRN cuts another position (Matt O'Donnell)

Somebody put them out of their misery.. Entercom BUY WCRN and make it WRKO 830

Joseph_Gallant on "Could Sean Hannity Move From WNEB-1230 To WTAG-580/W235AV-94.9?"

With numerous published reports speculating that Sean Hannity's syndicated talk show will change distributors to Clear Channel-owned Premiere Networks (although at this writing, nothing has been officially announced), I'm wondering if that could change where his show is heard in Central Massachsuetts.

Curently, Hannity's heard on WNEB-1230, a 1,000-watt station with a weak signal (vis-a-vis the market's other AM stations).

But Premiere parent company Clear Channel owns WTAG-580, with a 5,000-watt signal (and an FM tranalator, W235AV at 94.9, which fills in areas to the east and west of Worcester that don't get the best signal from WTAG, especially at night).

I wonder if a Premiere acquisition of the Hannity show will lead WTAG to dump the local afternoon show hosted by Jordan Levy to pick-up Hannity instead.

Certainly, WTAG/W235AV would save money by replacing a local show with Hannity, but Clear Channel/WTAG/W235AV may have to balance saving money against public outcry that would result were this move to be made.

Scott Fybush reported in the most recent (April 7th) Northeast Radio Watch (http://www.fybush.com/NERW/2008/080407/nerw.html#ma) that FM translator station W235AV (broadcasting at 94.9, coverage map at http://www.radio-locator.com/cgi-bin/pa ... W235AV&ser vice=FX&status=L&hours=U) is now rebroadcasting WTAG-580 instead of WJMN-94.5.

W235AV seems to have the biggest signal area I've ever seen for an FM translator in this part of the country; I have gotten it over the past few days in Norwood on several good to high-quality FM radios, whereas I don't think I did when it relayed WJMN.

Maybe W235AV has turned-off their stereo generator, given that they're now all-talk.

The move to rebroadcast WTAG does make sense for W245AV/WTAG owner Clear Channel, given that WTAG's nighttime signal is beamed north-south to protect WEZE-590 in Boston. W235AV gives WTAG's programming a strong nighttime signal in areas due east and due west of Worcester where WTAG's nighttime signal is not strong.

Wow. What a neat little building. Building a shopping center now? I thought we were in a recession. And I know they're not planning a regional mall for the site, but the local mall in my area (MERIDEN SQUARE note, I refuse to call it WESTFIELD) has a high number of vacancies as of late. (Much more than when I was there before XMAS). And at 12:15PM on a Thursday the Food Court was barely half full. I've been before at that time on a Thursday and it's usually packed.

A very signifigant piece of Broadcast History is in the developing stages to be torn down.

A developer wants to tear down the Westinghouse Plant where the original WBZ (then WBZA) towers have stood for years, for a shopping plaza.

Here is the story from WWLP.COM

Quote:

SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS (WWLP) A company called Packard Development has a vision for this aging motor factory in East Springfield.

Within a few years, it could be the home of eight to ten new stores and businesses.

This 41 acre plot of land in East Springfield doesn't look like much now, but a Newton-based builder has big plans. By the end of 2008, Packard Development hopes to level the old Westinghouse factory and begin construction on a $45 million shopping plaza.

Kathleen Brown, President of East Springfield N'Hood Council said, "This will have a significant impact on the neighborhood and what we're hoping is that it will have a positive impact. Traffic is going to be the biggest issue as we work towards completion of this project with the developers."

Jeanne and Wilfred Trudeau remember the old Westinghouse plant well. Wifred worked there for more than two decades beginning in 1946 and they still live less than one block away.

"I ran the tool room. I was the foreman that ran the tool room!"

The Trudeau's embrace the idea of a shopping plaza replacing the old plant. "That would be fine if it was a shopping center. What else are they going to put there? That would be great---no problem," said Jeanne Trudeau.

The Trudeau family says the Westinghouse plant closed in 1970. It has fallen into disrepair ever since; that's why most neighbors agree it's time for a major facelift.

If you have questions or concerns about the project proposed for the old Westinghouse plant site, there's an opportunity for you to voice them. The developer plans to meet with residents and city officials on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The public speak out will be held at 32 Stevens Street.
