It's a common pattern when two (or more) stations go all-Christmas in the same city: If one goes, the other follows within minutes.

A station that wants to go all-Christmas, but is beaten by a competitor, flips as soon as it can after the rival "takes the plunge" to avoid giving the rival any advantage.

I think it's very juvenile, but it's a fact of the industry.

Stations that go all-Christmas are scared that if you give a rival more than a few minutes' head start, the station that goes first becomes embedded in the minds of listeners as "The Christmas Station".

The only way a station that is second to go all-Christmas in a market has any hope to get an audience is to flip within minutes of the first.

Odd timing. And the coordination between the two is strange. I would have thought the start would be the end of the L&W show?
Anyway I checked with the Clear Channel station in Providence --101.5--and they didn't go.

For the record, WODS-103.3 flipped at 12 Noon EST; WROR-105.7 followed suit about 23 minutes later.

Both flipped a full week later than last year; I was surprised they waited this long.

With the retail industry (the dominant ad category for music-formatted radio) expecting an even worse Christmas-shopping season than last year and revenues for molst radio stations down substantially, I thought we'd see more stations flipping earlier this year.

I thought both WODS and WROR might have done it as early as November 1st.

It happened today on both stations (Fri 11/13/09). Both will be off my presets till a week or two before Christmas (would suggest WBOQ as an alternative)

WGBH gives the lame excuse that fok and blues are available elsewhere. Do they think their listeners are so stupid that they don't know this argument is much more relevant to the duplicative news and information programing that WGBH plans to provide. I'm a long time contributor who will be reconsidering my support.

Next thing, WGBH-89.7 will probably eliminate the nightly jazz block and go 24/7 NPR news and information.

Has anyone there noticed the station next to them on the dial??

It's WBUR-90.9, which has been running 24/7 NPR news/information for nearly two decades.

Besides, in most cities, there's room for only one NPR "news" station.

Despite the fact that Washington's WAMU-88.5 had been broadcasting 24/7 NPR news/info for several years, WETA-90.9 there dropped music (they were mostly a classical outlet) to try to compete with a similar NPR news/information format.

It didn't work. Within months, WETA went back to 24/7 classical music.

I'd go as far as to suggest that WGBH not only keep the folk and blues, but drop the NPR news shows also on WBUR and replace them (and the midday classical block) with jazz. I think it would work out very well for them.

If the FCC as expected approves the sale of WCRB to WGBH, WCRB 99.5 will stay classical but go non-commercial and WGBH will be more of a news-talk oriented station. They just announced the "difficult decision" to dump their Sat. afternoon folk and Sat. night blues shows, which had run for many years (in the case of the latter, Mai Cramer had done over 25 years by the time she passed on earlier this decade; Brendan Hogan had hosted it more recently).
They point out other spots on the dial do offer blues or folk (and there's also HD or
satellite radio if you prefer). But some stations may not be powerful, and the HD
and satellite options don't necessarily offer DJs or local content.

"We've Got Blues Here"--Mai Cramer

The switch happened at 1 am last night with 98.5 picking up the Fox sportflash followed by JT The Brick. He thanked WEEI for the past 13 years and frequently mentioned the new affiliate in Boston (he said he loves being on in Boston and music beds featured the rock band Boston). But WEEI was broadcasting it too(comp. with plugs for the competition)
After ESPN's world series coverage ended at 12:40 am, 850 went to Fox and stayed with them for a few hours then finally went to ESPN

98.5's web page confirms they are the new home for Fox Sports starting Mon., same day ESPN starts on WEEI. Both stations will feature these networks on overnights and weekendsa (and yes JT the Brick is part of this, 1-4 am Sun through Thu nights). Sporting News may still have some presence in town via WWZN 1510 nights & overnights etc
