Radiorwd, I'd like your permission to use this pic on the WBIG page in the NC Radio Broadcasting History section on my website. The URL is http://www.w4ktl.com Apparently email has been disabled by the forum administrator so I'm not able to email you. My email address is at the bottom of the home page on my website in gif format(don't want to display it here because of spambots, sorry for the incovenience). If anyone else has some history on WBIG in Greensboro they could share I'd greatly appreciate it. Although it was the second radio station to go on the air in NC, I'm having trouble finding out very much history.

My father played in a band in the 1930s on WBIG. The band, I believe, was called "Proximity Trio". His name was "Rocking Chair Weaver" and he played the mandolin. Other members were Bill Smith, Bob Butler (played banjo), and Jack Caudle [sic]. Radio announcer at the time was Easy Jones. Anyone recognize the names or know of any radio recordings during this time period? Thanks ...

WEGO's original studios in Concord still stand on Highway 29 in West Concord. It was deserted when WEGO moved to downtown Concord and its former FM sister WPEG skipped down to the big city, but the building is still standing there beside the highway.

Also, WHIP in Mooresville was a Wayne Nelson station, and is still in the original building. There's a Western Electric transmitter in there, and a Collins 20V-3, both inactive since the station bought a Nautel. It's located just north of town on Highway 115. Current owner, Glenn Hamrick LOVES to talk radio.

Both buildings were built identically, except that the WEGO building has a finished basement.

OOOO That sounds like fun.. at least for a radio geek like me.

Another station I want to see is WPAQ in Mt Airy. Here is a GREAT overview of the statin: http://www.well.com/user/dmsml/wpaq.html

When I was CE at WRNS and WANG... WRNS AM had a Gates BC5P as the main (!) and the back up was a Collins 300F from the 30's. WANG still runs (kinda) on a 20V3

My mother and her first husband literally built the station. I remember her telling me how they would wrap the inductors and dip them in parrafin, etc. The station, Greensboro's first and NC's second, was known as WNRC (Wayne Nelson's RadioCasting). Perhaps as a result of the divorce, the station was sold and renamed WBIG (We Believe In Greensboro). Sometime in the 1950s, she was invited to attend the 30th (?) anniversary banquet. She was somewhat disappointed that almost all of the attention was devoted to how the station had progressed since it became WBIG. She shouldn't have been surprised, since it had existed for most of its years under that call sign. She always retained some of that radio experience, never hesitating to tear into a malfunctioning receiving set. As a result of such early influence, I entered electronics myself, graduating with a BSEE from NC State and working as an electronics engineer for Lockheed until my retirement.
