After twenty years as an oldies station (with the exception of a brief period in 2001 and 2002 as all-sports), and decades as a Top-40 outlet prior to that, Toronto's legendary CHUM-1050 will drop oldies tomorrow (March 26th) at 5 A.M. EDT and replace it with an all-news format, to be branded as "CP-24 Radio 1050" ("CP-24" is the name of an all-news cable channel in the Toronto area owned and operated by CHUM's new parent company CTV/Globemedia).

    Radio and Records article: http://www.radioandrecords.com/RRWebsit ... /ShowHeadL ine.aspx?ContentID=48061&ContentTypeID=101&Archive=0 &FormatId=0 .

Personally, I think another shoe may drop. I personally wouldn't be surprised if Moses Zaminer's (mostly) Adult Standards-formatted CFZM-740 (formerly CHWO) were to become an all-out oldies station. CFZM already programs some 1950's/early 1960's oldies music on Friday evenings.

BTW, Toronto already has an all-news station, CFTR-680, owned by Rogers Communications.

I don't know why we need 2 news stations in Toronto. I think 680 should bring back the music. I am going to miss 1050 chum very much.

680 should stick with news, and flip Jack (92.5) into an all oldies station, messing CTV's 1050 up in a very big way.
(Oldies on FM is now legal in Toronto, thanks to new CRTC regs)

There is no room for two news stations, let alone another news/talker.
God only knows what 1050 would do if "CP24 1050" fails and an FM station were to go all oldies, stealing all their former jocks.

What would 1050 do if that were to happen? What if "CP24 1050" fails?

I guess there's always room for a Toronto version of this station:

I think Los Angeles needs an all-traffic format more than Toronto does! Laughing

True but Toronto needs an all traffic station more than it needs *another* news source. Laughing

On a more serious note, it does surprise me a bit that AM 640 didn't go all traffic already.

Outside of the Leaf games and leaf talk, it seems 640 is another station that isn't doing all that well.

Well, it looks like the new Vinyl 95.3 FM has picked up some of the former 1050 CHUM Jocks now.

1050 is a total complete failure (not even registered with the PPM tone!!!!)

With 95.3 now playing classic hits, there IS a hole in the market for Country music!

    Perhaps 1050 should try that!

Actually, more like 820 CHAM should go back to Country music!
See their numbers? (as the new Talk 820)
    Disaster...to say the least!
