After selling 92.7 WWXT Prince Frederick MD to Urban One last month, Red Zebra Broadcasting has sold the other FM simulcast of Sports “ESPN 980” WTEM Washington DC to Educational Media Foundation.
EMF will pay $250,000 for 94.3 WWXX Buckland VA, which serves the western suburbs of Washington in Northern Virginia, and flip it to its Christian AC “K-Love” network and non-commercial status. Following the sale of WWXX and its previous sale of WWXT and 950 WXGI Richmond to Urban One, Red Zebra will only retain 980 WTEM and “Sportstalk 570” WSPZ Bethesda MD.
It’s nice to see EMF enter the Washington D.C. market. I was thinking that EMF was going to acquire Washington Adventist University/Columbia Union College’s 91.9 WGTS since it’s a non-comm signal.
EMF mainly buys distressed or low-rated facilities. WGTS is enjoying its greatest success with the Christian Pop format — and it’s a full-market facility located inside the Beltway.

…said no one ever. Keep gobbling up more signals, guys. ?
Shame it couldn’t have gone with Air1 instead, since much of 94.3’s coverage area is already served by two established Christian ACs, WGTS and “Positive Hits” 89.9 WPER. But then, there you go — Air1’s positioner is “positive hits” so that wouldn’t have worked too well.
The EMF Borg is swallowing up commercial stations at an alarming pace. Before you know it, there’ll be no more commercial radio!
