The Roman Catholic Diocese of Brownsville’s RGV Educational Broadcasting is selling Public News/Talk/Classical/Jazz “88FM” 88.1 KHID McAllen/88.9 KJJF Harlingen TX to Immaculate Heart Media for $1.251 million.
The sale to the operator of the Catholic “Relevant Radio” network will make the McAllen/Brownsville/Harlingen market the largest in the continental United States without public radio programming. The intellectual property of the stations were not included in the sale at least opening up the potential for a new operator. A similar deal took place with RGV Educational Broadcasting sold KMBH-TV to R Communications in 2014. That station shifted to commercial operation and moved PBS programming to a digital subchannel.
KHID/KJJF currently features a mix of national NPR programming like Morning Edition and All Things Considered as well as Classical and Jazz music blocks.
