A developing controversy over recent comments by “Power 106” KPWR Los Angeles morning host (and syndicated into other markets for later dayparts) Nick Cannon has cost him one of his television jobs.
ViacomCBS cut ties with Cannon this evening for failing to apologize for perpetuating anti-Semitism in comments made on an episode of his YouTube show in June. While interviewing Public Enemy’s Professor Griff, who exited that group over his own anti-semitic remarks in 1989, Cannon stated “It’s never hate speech, you can’t be anti-Semitic when we are the Semitic people. When we are the same people who they want to be. That’s our birthright. We are the true Hebrews,” while also mentioning anti-Jewish conspiracy theories.
Cannon, who hosted “Wild ‘N Out” on ViacomCBS’ MTV and VH1, released the following statement regarding the comments on Monday:
In announcing Cannon’s termination, ViacomCBS released the following statement:
“ViacomCBS condemns bigotry of any kind and we categorically denounce all forms of anti-Semitism. We have spoken to Nick Cannon about an episode of his podcast Cannon’s Class on YouTube, which promoted hateful speech and spread anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. While we support ongoing education and dialogue in the fight against bigotry, we are deeply troubled that Nick has failed to acknowledge or apologize for perpetuating anti-Semitism, and we are terminating our relationship with him. We are committed to doing better in our response to incidents of anti-Semitism, racism, and bigotry. ViacomCBS will have further announcements on our efforts to combat hate of all kinds.”
In addition to hosting Nick Cannon Mornings on Meruelo Media’s KPWR, the show is syndicated by Skyview Networks for airing in afternoons on Rhythmic CHRs. He also hosts a weekly Rhythmic CHR countdown show distributed by Skyview. Cannon is also the host of Fox’ “The Masked Singer” and will have a daily syndicated talk show debuting in September.
