Q101 And WRXP Say Goodbye

Merlin Media assumed control of “Q101” WKQX, 97.9 WLUP Chicago, and 101.9 WRXP New York at 12:00am. WRXP ended its local music programming at 10:00pm with the Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony” before segueing into the syndicated Loveline. The station has been running automated music and sweepers since 11:52pm. Q101 was supposed to sign off its local programming at 12am, but kept going for an extra hour with its “Local 101” local music show before ending with Smashing Pumpkins “Tonight, Tonight” and The Cure “Friday I’m In Love”. Merlin Media To Take Control July 15; More Domains Registered

Merlin Media LLC will begin its LMA of the three stations it is acquiring from Emmis on Friday, July 15. The existing formats of “Q101” WKQX Chicago and 101.9 WRXP New York will end sometime around Midnight on Friday morning. All signs continue to point to some form of News or Talk programming debuting soon after on the two stations. Clear Channel’s Gift To The Rest Of Radio

At first glance Clear Channel’s announcement this morning of The IHeartRadio Music Festival looks like another in a long line of over-hyped national contests and events from Clear Channel. While the mega-concert taking place in Las Vegas on September 23 and 24 will generate much of the early attention, Clear Channel has just produced a two month long promotional campaign centered around two important issues facing the radio industry. Translator Report 7/11

With the July 4 holiday, its been a quiet start to the month on the translator front. Here’s the rundown of the big moves since our last report. Maverick Media has acquired W262BR Beloit, WI from Edgewater Broadcasting for $45,000 and has begun the process of moving the station to Rockford, IL. The moves will bump the translator from 4 watts on 100.3 to 230 watts on 100.5 where it will move to the same tower as new sister Active Rock “104.9 The X” WXRX. The Zone Moves Again In Salt Lake City

As Simmons Media moves to divest a number of stations required by its purchase of 3 Point Media and Millcreek Broadcasting last year, the aftershocks are beginning to be felt. Active Rock “97.5 The Blaze” KZZQ Coalville, UT dropped its format at 12am last night and began simulcasting Sports “1280 The Zone” KZNS Salt Lake City. Both of those stations are in the SLC Divestiture Trust I overseen by Larry Patrick. KZNS had been simulcasting since earlier this year on 104.7 KZNS-FM Lyman, WY which is remaining in Simmons possession. “The Blaze” had returned to its Active Rock format last December following a run as Variety Hits under the same moniker. Update 7/1: The second format launch at WWNQ brings a return of a previous format. WWNQ returned to the Classic Country “Country Legends 94.3” branding at 12pm today that it previously used from 2004 to 2008. Did we have something to do with that? Clear Channel’s 97.5 WCOS added the “My Country” tag to its imaging during WWNQ’s CHR tease. Or is Country Legends just another prolonged stunt? Update 7/1: Cox has thrown down the gauntlet at Clear Channel’s 93.3 WFLZ. Cox flipped 80’s/90s “101.5 The Point” WPOI Tampa to CHR as “Hot 101.5” at 11am today directly calling out WFLZ just as it did to other when it launched as The Power Pig. Hot becomes the 4th CHR in the Tampa Bay market joining WFLZ, and CBS’ tandem of Rhythmic CHR “WIld 94.1” WLLD and Adult CHR “Play 98.7” WSJT. Update 7/1: The programming shift is complete. 107.5 KXMG has flipped to Spanish CHR “Mega 107.5“. KCIL’s Country programming remains on 96.7. Update 5/10: The transition of the Country format in Houma has begun. 96.7 has dropped its Variety Hits “Dan-FM” format and begun simulcasting 107.5’s Country format. Update 5/5: The move on 107.5 into New Orleans takes another step closer to fruition as Sunburst has shuffled the call letters at its stations. The KCIL calls move off of 107.5 and head over to the 96.7 signal that will soon assume the “C107.5” Country format. As 107.5 prepares to flip to Spanish as “Mega 107.5” it became KXMG on May 2.
