MLB On The Radio 2016

2016 MLB Radio 670 The Score WSCR Cubs 890 WLS White Sox As the 2016 baseball season starts today, only two teams will be doing so on new flagship stations.

Both of those are in Chicago where the White Sox left CBS Sports “670 The Score” WSCR for Cumulus News/Talk 890 WLS. That enabled CBS to exercise an option in their deal with the Cubs to move them to WSCR after just one year on News 780 WBBM. The only other team with a status change for their flagship is in Philadelphia where the Phillies will be heard exclusively on CBS’ Sports 94.1 WIP-FM while departing Sister Talk 1210 WPHT after a few years simulcasting on both.

Team Flagships By The Numbers:

Flagships By Band: AM Only: 17 FM Only: 10 AM & FM: 3
Flagships By Owner: CBS: 9 (Cardinals, Cubs, Nationals, Orioles, Phillies, Pirates, Rangers, Tigers, Yankees), iHeart 8 (Astros, Dodgers, Indians, Marlins, Mets, Rays, Reds, Rockies), Cumulus: 3 (Braves, Giants, White Sox) Entercom: 3 (Athletics, Red Sox, Royals), Bonneville: 2 (Diamondbacks & Mariners), Others: 1
Spanish Flagships: 18
Korean Flagships: 1 (Dodgers)
Teams Co-Owned With Flagship Station: 3 (Angels, Blue Jays, Twins)

While most teams radio networks are generally in their geographic zone, some teams have affiliates that stick out. Some that we noticed were the New York Yankees being heard on Sports “1490 The Jock” KXLQ Indianola IA and the Los Angeles Dodgers on “Lucky 1300” WSTA Charlotte Amalie in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Due to hometown favorite Kolten Wong, Pacific Radio Group Sports “ESPN 850” KHLO Hilo has picked up the St. Louis Cardinals broadcasts for this season.
