Entercom Classical “Radio Bach” 1660 KUDL Kansas City will flip to Business on Monday, March 5.
The station will be branded as “KMBZ Business Channel” using the branding of sister News/Talk 980/98.1 KMBZ. Bottom Line Communications reports the station will feature a mix of Bloomberg and Wall Street Journal produced programming along with local news from KMBZ and a local 11am to 1pm show hosted by Mike Shanin. A local afternoon program is in the works as well.
1660 will also continue in its role as overflow station for sister “610 Sports” KCSP in addition to carrying minor league Kansas City T-Bones baseball and Motor Racing Network programming.
KUDL, until last year known as KXTR, can trace its Classical lineage to the 1950’s. It was located on 96.5 until 2000 when it was shifted to 1250 and then 1660 a year later. Its music library will be donated to Kansas Public Radio, which serves the Kansas City market on 91.5 KANU Lawrence, KS.
Has anybody ever made a profit with a business news station? Ever?
I know syndicated sports can show black ink with miniscule audience numbers but business? Lots have tried it but has anybody lasted?
The one business station that has hung around is Bloomberg News Radio in New York but the mayor has plenty of money and seems to use the station to promote his financial news service. Otherwise, does anybody see business as a viable format?
Most business stations are full of paid programming. Outside of most Christian Preaching stations, Business talk usually has the most pay for play. Low upfront costs for the station and nothing but revenue.
