Correction: ESPN Radio has not moved to 1230 WOIC, rather 93.1’s brokered afternoon show “The Zone” has moved to 1230. The State reports that ESPN is currently searching for a new Columbia market affiliate.
Update 7/30: 93.1 WZMJ dropped ESPN Radio for Variety Hits “Z93 The Lake” on Saturday as Lake Murray Communications began operating the station. Concurrently, new sister 107.9 WLXM-LP shifts to Christian programming.
Original Report 7/26: As Lake Murray Communications prepares to close on its purchase of “ESPN 93.1” WZMJ Batesburg/Columbia SC from the remnants of Inner City Broadcasting, its successor YMF Media is making room for the Sports format elsewhere in its cluster.
The company announced on its Facebook page earlier this week that the format will soon relocate to 1230 WOIC. That station currently airs a mix of syndicated and brokered talk shows.
As for 93.1 whose future owners currently operate “Lake Murray Radio” 107.9 WLXM-LP, no word yet on what future programming is headed its way.
93.1’s new format debuted sometime yesterday (7/28/12). The new format is Christian Contemporary as “Z93, The Lake”.
I can’t see how profitable this will be.
Sad to see ESPN leave the station. I’ve been trying out the new station and have to say after a few days of listening that I think it was a poor business decision…but I guess I don’t have the numbers.
Perhaps ESPN radio will land a contract with a “Columbia” station that I can actually pick up in Columbia.
