Entercom Classic Rock “K-FOX” 98.5 KUFX San Jose/102.1 KUZX San Francisco has shifted to a much broader Rock mix.
The former 70s/80s based Rock format has been expanded to include more songs from that era along with more 90s music branded as “The New Sound of KFOX: More Artists, More Classics”. The playlist is now broad enough to include The Beatles, Metallica, and Alanis Morrissette next to Classic Rock staples from the likes of Pink Floyd and Foreigner. The station is running commercial free daily from 9am to 12pm.
Greg Kihn, the performer best known for his Rock staples “Jeopardy” and “The Breakup Song (They Don’t Write Em Like That)” was dismissed as morning host at KUFX/KUZX after 16 years on Friday. In his place will be Annalisa, who comes over from middays at Cumulus’ AAA 104.5 KFOG/97.7 KFFG.
Here’s a sample hour of KFOX at 10:00am today:
Eagles – Lyin’ Eyes
Tom Petty – The Waiting
Metallica – Nothing Else Matters
Rolling Stones – Beast Of Burden
Beatles – Help!
Journey – Don’t Stop Believin’
Cutting Crew – (I Just) Died In Your Arms
Aerosmith – Love In An Elevator
War – Low Rider
Foreigner – Juke Box Hero
Pearl Jam – Better Man
John Cougar Melloncamp – Small Town
Led Zeppelin – Misty Mountain Hop
Toto – Africa
Offspring – Come Out And Play
I totally understand what they’re doing, but Toto into The Offspring is a segue from hell. I hope there was a stopset or something in between!
Seeing as it was in their daily 9am-12pm commercial free block there was no stopset. Based on the half hour or so I was listening, they’re running jockless this week with very plain imaging.
With no Variety Hits in the market, it appears they’re trying to fill that niche to better compete against KFOG and Clear Channel’s 103.7 KOSF without completely giving up the ghost of what they were previously.
I see classic rock heading in this direction as it tries to keep its audience from greying out of the format. All of those songs are strong with 35+. The trick is arranging them so they all fit together.
Yeah – listened today – no, there was no stopgap or anything – in fact I just rolled from Welcome to the Jungle right into Horse with no Name! Mash-ups from here!!!
