The Comedy format on 1200 WXKS Boston will cease after just seven months.
“Matty’s Comedy 1200” will flip to Bloomberg’s Business programming feed on Friday at 12:00am. The Boston Herald reports that the station will have 26 locally based staffers contributing to the programming.
The Comedy programming debuted in August 2012 following the demise of its previous Conservative Talk format. It will to continue to be heard on 107.9 WXKS-FM-HD2, while 1200 will simulcast on 94.5 WJMN-HD2.
Is anyone surprised that the commedy format is ending in Boston? I’m not although I’m sorry that this is taking place.
While it’s a positive thing that the station will employ a number of people to contribute to the Bloomberg Business format, I’m afraid if the ultimate purpose is to convince the highest number of listeners to tune in then those who made this decision are in for a disappointment.
When now Mayor Michael Bloomberg purchased WNEW-AM and changed the programming to his business news concept in 1993, he admitted that the reason he did this was not for ratings. He wanted a place where he could sell his terminals and other products and he got a 50,000 watt signal in New York to do it.
I hope the format succeeds and those who will be on staff will remain with the station for a long time but I doubt that will be the case.
Is Bloomberg actually buying WXKS-1200??
Look for a change in call letters to something that might spell “Bloomberg Boston”.
Has anyone heard as to whether Bloomberg was looking to buy stations in all of the ten largest metropolitan areas to expand their network??
I suspect Chicago, Washington, San Francisco and Los Angeles would be next on the list for expansion.
Bloomberg is LMA’ing the station from Clear Channel.
