Original Report 11/26: The ever-booming Classic Hip-Hop format adds another convert as Cox Media shifts Urban AC “Star 94.5” WCFB Daytona Beach/Orlando to the 90s based format.
Positioned as “Celebrating The Holidays With Throwback Hip-Hop And R&B”, the station is promoting the move as being through the holiday season. Although it appears this move will be permanent as the station has dropped the syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show with the change.
As recently as the August 2014 Nielsen Audio PPM Ratings, WCFB was the #1 station in the Orlando market with a 7.1 share. Since then it has been on a downward trend to a 5.2 and a sixth place finish in October.
This format is getting out of control…. I mean the other format changes I can see why, but I did not foresee a station like this to follow the bandwagon. Sure their ratings been going downhill ever since they reached #1 in August, but the fact of the matter is that this station still has good numbers, ousting many others in Orlando. And since this really been a format only recently embraced by many stations, it might just be a fad like the rhythmic oldies format in the early 2000’s. The folks at Cox is definitely taking a chance here.
But it will be a good flanker for Cox’s highly rated WPYO.
exactly what I was thinking…bet they don’t get anywhere near a 5.2 and 6th place with this. Too niche and too much bandwagon-jumping.
Which is why they reverted to their original format.
