Update 10/13: At 5pm today, the Beyonce stunt on KROI Seabrook/Houston gave way to Classic Hip-Hop “Boom 92“.
The stations lists core artists as Jay Z, Biggie, 2Pac, Dr. Dre, Missy Elliott, Geto Boys, and UGK. The name is meant to match with sister “97.9 The Box” KBXX as in “Boom Box” representing how the songs were played in the 80s/90s. Listen to the launch of “Boom 92” at FormatChange.com.
The first song was Geto Boys “Mind Playing Tricks On Me”.
On the eve of its announcement, Radio One of Texas II, LLC generated buzz and filled the airways with advertising free, 24-7 music from Beyonce. Today, Radio One announced its new permanent format, Boom 92.1 FM, a Classic Hip Hop station. It is the first major market throwback Hip Hop station of its kind in the country. And its Houston’s own.
Currently, Radio One is home to Majic 102.1 FM and The Box 97.9 FM, an adult R&B and mainstream Hip Hop and R&B stations respectively. Now classic Hip Hop gets added to the roster of the Urban Media Specialists.
“We couldn’t be more excited about bringing Classic Hip Hop back to listeners who grew up on the lyrics, beats and rhythm of this genre of music,” said Terri Thomas, Operations Manager, Radio One of Texas. Radio One research supports that Houston has an appetite for Classic Hip Hop.
“Radio One is known for firsts.” said Jay Stevens, Senior Vice President, Programming, Radio One. “This is classic – throwback Hip Hop and you can only hear it all-day, every day on the BOOM.” Station management is looking to heavily engage its new audience with good ole’ fashion events and programming features highlighting the artists and music that ‘take you back’.

Original Report 10/12: Radio-One is setting its plans for the former “News 92” KROI Seabrook/Houston.
While the current “B92.1” all-Beyonce stunting has garnered international attention, it won’t last much longer. Radio-One has registered Boom921FM.com, Boom92FM.com, Boom92Houston.com, HoustonBoom92.com, and HoustonBoom921.com for the station. The five domains redirect currently to a protected site on WordPress.com, where Radio-One hosts all of its station’s sites. While it doesn’t give away the format for the new station, we’ve heard that a Classic Hip-Hop format is intended for the station.
There may be a hitch in Radio-One’s plans though, as “Boom FM” is trademarked by CBS Radio and an application to trademark “Boom” for use in radio was made by CBS on October 3. CBS has utilized the “Boom” branding on 96.5 KJAQ-HD2 Seattle. In December 2009, 107.3 WNWV Cleveland flipped to AAA utilizing the “Boom” moniker but within weeks it ceased utilizing the branding after being hit with a Cease & Desist from CBS.
This would make sense, considering “Boom” and “Box” go hand in hand…and maybe might take some shares back from The Beat.
LOL, they trademarked the Boom name?
