Cox Media's decade long attempt to improve the Atlanta coverage of 95.5 WSBB-FM Doraville GA has been denied due to actions of the other party involved.
In the release of the April PPM monthly released yesterday, Nielsen Audio flagged Cumulus CHR “Q100” 99.7 WWWQ Atlanta was slapped with a notice for attempting to identify potential PPM panelists. Prior the the ratings period starting the station held an online contest that originally asked participants “If you were asked to be in a radio ratings project that required you to carry a device that recorded all your radio listening would you do it?”. One of the responses to choose said “Yes, in fact I’m participating in a ratings project right now”. Nielsen stated that Cumulus cooperated in their investigation and that no panelist identity was learned. Former syndicated morning host PK, most recently of CBS CHR “Hot 95.7” KKHH Houston, and his wife Denise Kalentzis are joining iHeartMedia CHR “Power 96.1” WWPW Atlanta for mornings. The couple will join Riley Couture, who has been hosting mornings solo on WWPW since the exit of co-host Scotty K and producer Bret Mega last month. PK himself was one of the end of 2015 talent cuts made by CBS Radio across the country. PK and Denise both worked on the syndicated “PK’s Playhouse” based at “Jammin 95.5” KXJM Portland from 2000 to 2009. He then joined KKHH in 2010 through his layoff at the end of 2015. The most expected move in Atlanta radio will take place tomorrow morning as Jenn Hobby joins Jeff Dauler on Entercom Hot AC “Star 94” WSTR to announce the start date for their new morning show. Both Dauler and Hobby worked together on the syndicated Bert Show based at Cumulus’ “Q100” WWWQ from 2002 to 2012. Hobby then moved to middays at Cumulus Country “Kicks 101.5” WKHX before exiting late last year. Dauler announced his departure from the Bert Show in November to join WSTR. That move led to quick animosity between the Bert Show and Dauler as they registered numerous domains connected to Dauler and Hobby. Cox Media Group AC “B98.5” WSB-FM Atlanta has hired Tad Lemire as its new morning host joining Melissa Carter. Lemire joins WSB-FM from Cox’ “Mix 96” KRAV Tulsa and previously worked for the company’s “Star 99.9” WEZN Bridgeport CT where he worked for WSB-FM PD Chris Eagan. He also spent many years in the Providence market at 93.3 WSNE and “98.1 WCTX“. Lemire will debut in Atlanta on February 1 and replaces Jeff Elliott who departs the company. Following the loss of their 99.3 W257DF Dallas GA translator last July due to interference caused to 99.3 WCON-FM Cornelia, Steve Hedgwood’s Core Communicators has relaunched the “Old School” brand in Atlanta on 87.7 WTBS-LP Atlanta. Unlike the last variation of the station, which was one of three Classic Hip-Hop stations in the market, the new incarnation of “Old School” is airing an R&B Oldies format. WTBS-LP is owned by Prism Broadcasting Network and had been running a Spanish CHR format as “Mega 87.7“. Core Communicators also operates Urban “Streetz 94.5” W233BF/WSTR-HD3 in the Atlanta market.
Radio-One has shifted 97.5 WUMJ Fayetteville/Atlanta from a simulcast of Urban AC “Majic 107.5” WAMJ Roswell to one of Classic Hip-Hop “Boom 102.9” W275BK Decatur. The change is coordinated with the debut tomorrow of the syndicated Ed Lover Show in mornings on Radio-One’s Classic Hip-Hop stations. The addition of WUMJ increases Boom’s coverage to the south of Atlanta including the Peachtree City and Newnan areas (Coverage Map). If there’s one thing we know to expect every November most of the same stations that flipped to Christmas music last year and the year before that and the year before that will do so again this year. That is the primary reason we are no longer producing the list of all stations playing Christmas music. It is very predictable what station will play Christmas music in each market and that they will then return to their regular playlist as soon as the calendar changes to December 26. But there are still the stations that use the holiday music to clear out their previous audience and build attention for a format change after the holidays.
