Fab 94.3 Winnipeg Goes On A Drive

Jim Pattison Broadcast Group has rebranded Classic Hits “Fab 94.3” CHIQ-FM Winnipeg has rebranded as “94.3 The Drive“. The move corresponds with the drop of 1960s tracks from the station to focus on hits of the 70s and 80s with a greater Rock lean. CHIQ ranked 10th out of 16 stations with a 3.9 share in the Fall 2015 Numeris ratings. Kerri Salki and Trevor Gowen will host mornings with Alix Michaels in middays and Kelly Parker in afternoons.

Corus Launches National Fresh Radio Brand Across Canada

Corus Radio has rebranded seven of its AC and Hot AC stations across Canada as “Fresh Radio“. Five of the stations were previously using a similar “Fresh-FM” branding while the other two were branded as “Hits” prior to today. Rogers Media Hot AC “102.3 Clear-FM” CKY-FM Winnipeg has rebranded as “Kiss 102.3“. The rebranding continues the expansion of the Kiss brand across Canada by Rogers including six other Hot AC’s including Calgary and Ottawa and two CHRs including Toronto. No changes to the airstaff or programming including their “No Repeat Work Day” between 9am and 5pm. Corus flipped CJKR to Classic Rock “97.5 Big-FM” at 8:00 this morning. Positioned as “Big Hits and Real Classic Rock”, Big launched with Peter Gabriel’s “Big Time”. The station will run jockless and commercial-free until Monday when a new morning show yet to be announced will debut then. Winnipeg Gains A Jewel

Evanov Soft AC 100.7 CFJL Winnipeg has gained its third identity in almost as many months. In October the CRTC allowing the station to drop the Adult Standards portion of its playlist by dropping the specialty requirement from the station’s license. Soon after CFJL dropped its “100.7 The Breeze” moniker for just “100.7 Lite & Refreshing“. Now the station becomes Evanov’s seventh Jewel branded station as “Jewel 101“. In the Fall 2013 BBM ratings, CFJL registered a 1.8 share of the Winnipeg audience.

Classic 107 Winnipeg To Launch

Golden West Broadcasting will flip Christian CHR “Ignite 107” CFEQ-FM Winnipeg to Classical “Classic 107” CKCL-FM on Thursday, December 5 at 10:00am. Golden West gained CRTC approval earlier this year to flip CFEQ to a Classical format that will feature 70% classical and concert music and the rest a mix of jazz, blues, and instrumental versions of pop songs. The Jazz programming will air from 9pm-12am on the station. The station is currently stunting with a brief loop of Classical and Jazz tracks. Golden West also owns Christian AC 95.1 CHVN in the Winnipeg market.

CRTC Approves Bell/Astral Merger

The CRTC has approved the second attempt by Bell Canada to acquire Astral Media. “Astral’s application put forward a different approach and responded to many of our concerns” said Jean-Pierre Blais, Chairman of the CRTC. “Yet there remained a significant risk that BCE could exert its market power to limit choice and competition. To ensure the public interest is served, we are requiring BCE to invest in new Canadian programming and sell more than a dozen services, and we are putting in place a number of competitive safeguards. This will maintain a healthy and competitive broadcasting system that offers more programming choices to Canadian consumers and citizens and more opportunities for Canadian creators.” BCE must spend $71.5 million on initiatives related to the radio sector, which is eq...Read More

Pattison Acquires Winnipeg and Calgary Stations

Jim Pattison Broadcast Group has announced the acquisition of three stations from the proposed Astral/Bell merger. From Bell the group has acquired Rhythmic AC “Kool 101.5” CKBE Calgary and Classic Hits “Fab 94.3” CHIQ Winnipeg. Coming from Astral is Country “QX 104” 104.1 CFQX. Terms of the sale were not disclosed. The sale is contingent on CRTC approval of this and the Astral/Bell merger. Bell/Astral Merger Take 2; Two Ottawa Stations Sold

After rejecting the planned merger of Bell Media and Astral in October, the two companies plans have have been approved by the Competition Bureau. In order to do so, a few swaps will be made with Corus Entertainment and Shaw Media mainly involving ownership stakes in cable television networks but one that has ramifications on the radio industry as Corus will acquire two radio stations in Ottawa: Classic Hits “Boom 99.7” CJOT and Rock “106.9 The Bear” CKQB.
