Two years after launching broad Variety Hits 99.9 WFNX Athol and Oldies/Standards “AM 700” WFAT Orange-Athol MA, Northeast Broadcasting will pull the plug on the stations and revert them to simulcasts of AAA “92.5 […]
Wow. Years ago when I was living in Buffalo, I could pick up 700 pretty decently. If I remember correctly, it was a news/talk station at the time, and I think 99.9 was adult hits. It’s sad to hear about these stations going by the wayside, but honestly, this really isn’t a surprise anymore. I figure someone will eventually revivie the 99.9 frequency, but 700 will be buried. Sad, just sad.
Both 99.9 and 700 will remain on the air as simulcasts of 92.5 in Boston. I did notice that 700 (which is daytime only) will be getting a translator on 92.3 as part of the AM revitalization
Oh, okay then. At least 700 isn’t dead, then.
Not sure how I understand how simulcasting the river on AM 700 would make more money than just running the current automated format. FM maybe… Especially when/if they get their translator.

KZQX Chalk Hill, TX went from LPFM to commercial several years ago.
You may see more of it. It shows even music LPFMs that do very well could be viable enough for a commercial station.
There’s also WIOE-LP 98.3 in Warsaw IN, whose owners purchased the silent 101.1 facility in South Whitley IN and moved the format there in its’ entirety, taking it to commercial status.
Come to think of it, I believe I may have read about that somewhere.

The what goes around comes around cycle of programming is seeing the return of the all 1980’s format.
Just weeks after iHeart VP Darren Davis mentioned at the NAB Show that the “iHeart 80s” channel was the most […]
Perhaps this format will work now at this period. I remember when WMLL in St. Louis went all ’80’s, over a decade ago, and the ratings were dismal. Too bad, because it was a good station, just a bit ahead of it’s time, I guess.
This reminds me in specific of 1999, their sister station 95.7 (at the time WZTR) in Milwaukee. During 1999 they started playing mostly 60s music, and repeatedly referred to themselves as “The 60s Station” (It was “Oldies 95.7” officially)
At the end of 1999, they went jockless, robotic voice saying “WZTR is not Y2K Compliant”
January 1st, 2000 they changed their call letters to WRIT-FM. WRIT was one of two Top-40 stations in Milwaukee in the 1960s. They deepened the playlist, focusing heavily on the 60s.
Like every other station of it’s type that is still around, they evolved to 70s & 80s. First attempt was 10 years ago, only to go back to 60s and 70s in 2009, but they returned to 70s & 80s last year.
I have always liked this station (KABQ) I look forward to the 80s format. I am also glad iHeart retained the classic country format on 98.1
