When has radio NOT gone where the money is? RKO General did not hire Bill Drake out of a desire to serve the public. If your station doesn’t make money, you go off the air.

The long term strategy is to evolve into digital with your audience. But you can’t pay the bills on digital alone today so you need your broadcast properties to perform.

You’re implying that the people using radio know (or care) who owns the stations. They don’t.

Why does anyone have loyalty to terrestrial radio? Why does anyone have any loyalty to internet radio? Why does anyone have loyalty to their mobile device? People don’t listen to the radio for the sake of listening to the radio, they listen to what we…[Read more]

    • Yes, you are right, people don’t care who owns the stations they listen to. But as a former fan of radio that has stopped listening and now watches from the sideline, they DO care about the product put on the air. I’m not saying there are not talented DJ’s out there, but cost cutting and voicetracking have killed the medium, ESPECIALLY for the…[Read more]

I don’t know if this is a sign that radio is giving up on 18-34 or not. Face it, 25-54 has always driven revenue. Back in 1990 when I lived in a city with 5 AC stations all chasing the same demo and CHR in decline we didn’t dismiss the demise of CHR as radio giving up on my generation, we just acknowledged that pop music was stuck in the extremes…[Read more]

    • What you’ve asked — “can you blame radio for going where the money is?” — leads to what is basically an existential crisis for the business.

Having paid too much for stations, cut staffing and eliminated marketing and research for the benefit of debt service and quarterly targets means that no, you can’t blame them for going where the money…[Read more]

The difference between Hot AC and AC is so slight these days… They’re trying to flank KRBE right now between 95.7 and 96.5 and the result is two 2 share radio stations that KRBE can easily beat. Not really sure that they’d do any better using 2 stations to flank KODA.

You can do a flanker attack on KODA, but you don’t have to use 2 stations…[Read more]

Everyone forgets that WOMX Orlando (the former BJ-105) is where Zapoleon perfected the Mix format for Nationwide before taking it to Houston.

This makes me think about the station I was listening to back in 1981, KZZP Phoenix.

    Of the titles you list:
    – Everything on the “actually pretty good list” I remember them playing, and they spun the Moody Blues Gemini Dream enough to warrant listing them twice. Besides Gemini Dream they also played The Voice a lot.
    – Everything on the…[Read more]

More likely: KLUC, KFRH, KPLV, and KVEG will ignore whatever happens to Pulse. It’s worked pretty well for them so far.

I wonder if Salkowitz will try to talk Kemp into leasing out KVGQ? With it only bringing in a 0.6 6+, the allure of getting a check every month would have to be strong.

They started geofencing the website stream so those outside of Nevada can only listen to the “New York” feed.

But so far the mobile app is still playing the Vegas stream if you want to get your fill of commercials for Naqvi Injury Law and the Little Darlings strip club until the very end. (You’ve got to love a spot that tells young women to…[Read more]

There’s also the booster that barely gets KYLI into Vegas. But they’re not what I would call a commercial success, either.

The songs that make hardcore EDM fans happy don’t move the masses. The dance songs that cross over to pop get plenty of airplay from CHR. End result is you have a format that is better suited to online (where the cost of…[Read more]
