Percy Squire’s Sandblast LP exercises its option to purchase Gospel “The Drum” 1580 WVKO/92.9 W225CS Columbus OH from TSJ Radio for $250,000. Squire’s Stop 26 Riverbend previously owned WVKO from 2004-2006.

John, I would think that you of all people would be aware of this. It’s true, assuming that the FCC approves the transfer. Check the WVKO-AM application list. You’ll find:

Was listening yesterday morning and the station had dead-air from 6:00 AM until 8:50 AM. Maybe lost their satellite feed?                           So, decided to check if the FCC had approved the sell or not because it appears this may not be approved by the FCC. This will be interesting to see if the FCC approves the sale or not to Percy Squire’s Sandblast LP.

What do you believe the Commission’s concerns will be over Percy/Sandblast acquiring WVKO?  They’ve licensed two translators to him in the not so distant past.  One is now Salem’s the Fish.  The other is currently airing WVKO AM

Looks like an app was submitted in February to the FCC:

FCC app for transfer of WVKO-AM

I am not surprised given TSJ divesting other stations they have owned. TSJ offloaded 103.1 WVKO-FM late last year.

Given Percy owning 92.9 Translator and previously owning 95.9 before selling it to Salem Media of Ohio I would foresee the FCC approving this one.

TSJ still leases WLFM channel 6 in Cleveland, but they just had a major cutback in power due to WOUC’s repack putting it on RF 6/PSIP 44. It now operates at … 5 watts, but it’s all temporary, as WLFM is soon to end its existence as a FrankenFM, given that the owner filed to convert it to a digital TV station on RF 20. And of course TSJ doesn’t have a backup plan or a permanent FM signal for the format.

With these divestitures of the WVKO stations, WOXY in Oxford is the only station they still own outright.

WOXY in Oxford went to Lazo with WVKO-FM.

Well, then they clearly are winding down operations outright with 1580’s sale.

“La Mega” will cease to exist in Cleveland once WLFM Channel 6 flips to digital (but their audience is in the dark about that, TSJ has never explained the circumstances that allows channel 6 to impersonate an FM signal) and no backup plan exists. Which is a shame, as no commercial full-time Spanish-language radio station exists in the Cleveland market, that audience is totally underserved.

Despite some doubt expressed here, Commission approved the transfer to Squire’s Sandblast yesterday.  (4-24)

    LOL.

And also with this sale, TSJ reorganized itself as La Mega Media, claiming to still have WVKO-FM and WOXY in the fold.

yea, that actually means squat! It’s not a sale till the deal is consummated, and the commission approves that (as a matter of routine), but that’s not done yet…so TSJ still owns it…

they are two different companies, the GM bought the stations….but definitely not the same or related  companies…

    I had no idea what else to call it. ^^;

The new entity doesn’t own any stations, they operate WLFM Channel 6 (via LMA from onetime radio exec Tom Wilson d/b/a “Murray Hill Broadcasting”) and it implies that they are now operating WVKO-FM and WOXY via LMAs.

On April 24, 2019 the FCC approved the sale of WVKO-AM from TSJ to Sandblast. The sale has yet to be  consummated and its been over 90 days so will this happen? Is the FCC authorization null and void  after 90s days? Yes, there was some doubt on this thread about the sale ever happening.

It appears 1580 WVKO is not being programmed by Percy Squire at the moment.

As of last Friday evening, WVKO 1580 was airing continuous R@B Oldies music from the 60s and 70s with only occasional “WVKO 1580 Columbus” IDs. No commercials, PSAs are heard and his WVKO translator on 92.9 has had dead air for the last three days. The WVKO stream seems to be live with its normal gospel format but no mention of them losing the 1580 AM and 92.9 FM frequency as of yet. It appears to me the deal to purchase WVKO-AM fell through and he also lost the LMA with the WVKO owner. This is somewhat ironic because for the last two weeks they have have announced plans for an ambitions local morning show to replace the satellite fed morning show.
