Now that I made a thread on WROW’s “Magic 590/100.5” that they put out the “Top 5 Drive At 5” where we counts down the top 5 songs from certain years every week, I decided to start doing another thread on the WKNY’s “Rock & Roll Flashback where Warren Lawrence counts down the top 15 songs each and every week. Unlike the “Top 5 Drive at 5”, this is completely different approach to see how this one lives up. Since I haven’t posted before, so I decided to catch up, because I haven’t started a thread during the last few months. So, without further ado, here we go.

We will begin with the top 15 songs from around January 13th 1961 as heard on WKNY from 1/13/18. Here are the rundowns to start off with. Here we go.

    15. Wonderland By Night (Louis Prima)
    14. He Will Break Your Heart (Jerry Butler)
    13. Calcutta (Lawrence Welk)
    12. Many Tears Ago (Connie Francis)
    11. A Thousand Stars (Kathy Young)
    10. You’re Sixteen (Johnny Burnette)
    9. Corrina Corrina (Ray Peterson)

    6. Rubber Ball (Bobby Vee)
    5. Will You Love Me Tomorrow (Shirelles)

    3. Exodus (Ferrante & Teicher)
    2. Are You Lonesome Tonight (Elvis Presley)
    1. Wonderland By Night (Bert Kaempfert)

BONUS: My Last Date With You (Skeeter Davis)

    HONORABLE MENTIONS: THE BOTTOM 5:

    16. Sailor (Lolita)
    17. Lonely Teenager (Dion)
    18. Wonderland By Night (Anita Bryant)
    19. Shop Around (Smokey Robinson & The Miracles)
    20. Wings Of A Dove (Ferlin Husky)

Tell us what you think about this new thread. I will keep posting more of the same ASAP until I can catch up with stuff that I haven’t posted yet. Stay tuned!

Even without yet hearing it I already like it better. It has more songs and goes back further to a great year!

I agree with you. I prefer this one a lot better than the “Top 5 Drive at 5” and it has more songs than any other songs used in both countdown shows. And speaking of that, I got another one to catch up, the top 15 songs from 1/20/68 as heard on WKNY from 1/20/18. Here are the rundowns.

    15. Monterey (The Animals)
    14. Different Drum (Stone Ponies)
    13. Susan (Buckinghams)
    12. Skinny Legs And All (Joe Tex)
    11. Honey Chile (Extended Remix) (Martha & The Vandellas)
    10. If I Can Built My Whole World Without You (Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell)
    9. I Heard It Through The Grapevine (Extended Remix) (Gladys Knight & The Pips)
    8. I Second That Emotion (Smokey Robinson & The Miracles)
    7. Bend Me, Shape Me (American Breed)
    6. Daydream Believer (Monkees)
    5. Green Tambourine (Lemon Pipers)
    4. Woman, Woman (Gary Puckett & the Union Gap)
    3. Hello Goodbye (Beatles)
    2. Chain of Fools (Aretha Franklin)
    1. Judy In Disguise (John Fred & The Playboy Band)

HONORABLE MENTIONS – THE BOTTOM 5:

    16. Spooky (Classics IV)
    17. Nobody But Me (Human Beinz)
    18. Boogaloo Down Broadway (Fantastic Johnny C)
    19. Who Will Answer (Ed Ames)
    20. Baby, Now That I’ve Find You (Foundations)

    https://drive.google.com/open?id=1IBGg3WtaGof3fMJEQ0adt9lG_pH4xTnb

I just pointed out that two of the songs “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” and “Honey Chile” are both extended remix. I prefer the original mix over these two. Not a fan of Motown’s extended remix, because of both the instrumental portions and the vocal a cappella mixed in which was kinda strange. I’ll stick to Motown’s original mix instead.

Next on the list, the top 15 songs from 1/27/65 from 1/27/18. Here are the rundowns.

    3. Name Game (Shirley Ellis)
    2. You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ (Righteous Brothers)
    1. Downtown (Petula Clark)

HONORABLE MENTIONS – THE BOTTOM 5

    16. The Jerk (Larks)
    17. Goin’ Out Of My Head (Little Anthony & The Imperials)
    18. Give Him A Great Big Kiss (Shangri-Las)

    https://drive.google.com/open?id=1XpMU79XOs7o99ubzY2zmglOPNHPlCgBp

    (*) Extended Remix

All of the songs heard in the countdown are almost in the correct order, but there was one problem, the songs “Let’s Lock the Door” was #14 and “I’ll Be There” was #13 got mixed up, so these two songs “Let’s Lock the Door” at #13 and “I’ll Be There” at #14 got it right. And another problem, it was missing the #9 song, because Warren Lawrence forgot to play the #9 song? What is going on here?! I’ll have throw it in as a bonus. I’ll give to Warren Lawrence and I will share it for you, the #9 song that WKNY should’ve played it. It’s a great song, and it’s by Del Shannon.

And another problem, I hate the remixed versions of Motown classics, like the one at #8 is “Come See About Me” by the Supremes. Ugh! I’ll stick to the original mix of this one.

    20. Wild Thing (Senator Bobby)

    https://drive.google.com/open?id=1vyWu-1rCMChQKJkoW5B3l40wgRQIA0jC

In addition, one of these songs got mixed up, AGAIN!!! I’ll go through the Billboard Hot 100 to see if they can get it right.

“Green Green Grass of Home” at #13
    “Stand By Me” at #12
“The Beat Goes On” at #10

And also, an extended remix version of “Love Is Here, and Now You’re Gone” is bad. I can’t stand those Motown remixes. I prefer the original mix over this one. Warren Lawrence, what is going on here!!!! I hate the remixed versions of Motown classics, because it sucks! The original mix is better since it was first released on a 45.

Some of the songs are suppose to put it in the correct order, except “You’re Really Got a Hold On Me” by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles, OMG!!!! Once again, stop the presses, a horrendous extended remix. UGH!!!! I HATE THE EXTENDED REMIX VERSIONS OF MOTOWN CLASSICS, STICK TO THE ORIGINAL 45 MIX.

Like I said many times, the original 45 mix that Motown produced is a TON better than the extended remix versions. Bad move, MOTOWN!!!! I’ll give the Motown remixes a big thumbs down!

I hate it! I hate it! And I hate it! The original 45 mixes are way, way better than the remix versions. Bad move. This is to all you people who hated remixed versions of 60’s classics!

These songs were featured as part of AT40 show with Casey Kasem. To see the full lists, here is the link.

    http://www.oldradioshows.com/at40/022771.html

And also, and a bonus, here is a scoped aircheck from 2/20/71 where Casey Kasem counts down the 40 biggest hits, including the 15 songs that Warren Lawrence plays, but it got it mixed up, and here it is in correct order:

And in addition, an extended remix versions of “Just My Imagination” by the Temptations is the version that I hate it, stick with the original 45 version, and also, a demo version of “Mama’s Pearl” by the Jackson 5 was on there, and it was originally called “Guess Who’s Making Whoopee With Your Girlfriend” was supposed to be “Mama’s Pearl”. I prefer the original version of “Mama’s Pearl” than the demo version, because it was ridiculous to play the demo version on the air. Stick with “Mama’s Pearl”, not “Guess Who’s Making Whoopee With Your Girlfriend”.

Just to let you know, according to what Warren Lawrence was saying when he played the #9, he was mentioning David Ruffin and the Temptations, but David Ruffin was no longer a member of the group. He left in 1968 for a solo career, so they brought in Dennis Edwards from the Contours, and did a million seller called “Cloud Nine”. The song “Runaway Child, Running Wild” was their group’s followup to “Cloud Nine”, and Dennis Edwards was with the Temptations, not David Ruffin.
