Over the past few weeks, I’ve been hearing 2 or 3 minute commentaries by Bill O’Reilly in place of some of the top of the hour local newscasts.  You’ll get one minute, or so of news, and then the commentary.   Bill will talk about an issue, and occasionally mention his latest book, “Killing The S.S.”.  Are these paid for spots?  They don’t seem to be from the Salem Radio Network as one heard today, just after 1:00pm,  went long.  So, when WHK returned to the network feed of “The Dennis Prager Show”, they cut back in after the opening music for “The Happiness Hour” was already playing, missing the very beginning.

WHK is one of the charter affiliates of his new feature/show–which was originally announced perhaps a few months ago, but just launched this week.  However, it’s officially presented as a 15-minute show–so maybe some affiliates are breaking it up into smaller segments.

Looks like O’Reilly is doing the Paul Harvey thing with this new feature.

Bill O’Reilly and Paul Harvey should never be mentioned in the same sentence together. Heck, they shouldn’t even be mentioned separately in adjoining rooms.

Wow, Bill O’ has really fallen from relevancy.

The big problem with doing a 15 minute show is that the format doesn’t work on talk stations, the format is intentionally set up in hour blocks and the listener expects it to be that way. Paul Harvey was the last one who was able to get away with breaking that format.

And WHK is further blurring the lines between news and opinion by putting his opinion segments within their newscast space. Yikes.

Paul Harvey had advertisers who stuck by his show for decades.

Bill O’ lost his Fox News show because all of the press coverage regarding his many misdeeds caused him to single-handedly lose all his advertisers.

Replacing a top of the hour newscast with an opinion piece disguised as news….has to land somewhere in the top 5 unethical things a radio station could do…..maybe top 3??

Clearly, some don’t know Paul Harvey’s history.

That’s essentially what many of these TOH news segments have become, even from the once reputable names in news.

Salem’s conservative talkers don’t draw any ratings. It’s all about ideology and advancing a pro-Trump agenda.

Paul Harvey notwithstanding, this situation as John describes it seems more troublesome.  It sounds like sometimes WHK is straight up replacing a  TOH newscast with commentary, and that WHK is doing so in a fashion that would make it difficult for the average radio listener to recognize any difference.  Though to Nathan’s point it’s likely most of WHK’s audience doesn’t mind, still, in my opinion that doesn’t make it any less unethical.

Jay Sekulow is being retained by Trump as his primary lawyer, and is on the cable networks explicitly as such. He should not be actively hosting a radio show, but Salem doesn’t care. They are a house organ for Trump just like Fox News is… if you don’t comply, you’re forced out like Medved was or buried in late night and ignored like Joe Walsh is.

Jay’s continued employment by Salem is even more poisonous when you realize that Larry Kudlow was forced to give up his weekend talk show when he joined Trump as an adviser, but that’s because Cumulus/Westwood One is run by people with ethical backgrounds.

My comment wasn’t directed to you. Nor John’s comment. Simply that Mr. Harvey had some very O’Reilly-like moments in his career. Any offense that one is mentioned with the other shows a lack of historic context for Mr. Harvey.
    Good day.

I don’t think, though, that it’s accurate to say that he’s actually employed by Salem (like Mr. Walsh is and Mr. Medved was).  His show may officially be an in-house ACLJ production–even though, yes, it’s carried on a lot of Salem-owned outlets.  Indeed, I wouldn’t be surprised if the airtime for the show is actually bought.

Now that is a funny quote!  The Atlanta market manager has made racist comments directly to one its African-American hosts.  Not something an ethical person would do.
