Gray is demanding everyone give their passwords to management for social media accounts at WOIO.

Yeah, and someone leaked the email to Scott Jones. Not a good look, Gray.

The Wittman/Dufala/Reed “19 Action News” era was all about being aggressive and was unapologetically tabloid.

The Robinson/Nolan “Cleveland 19” era was all about being prim, proper, kinder, and gentler

On first look, the Tucker/Tanaka “19 News” era looks to be a bit more hard hitting, but without going overboard – kind of the Goldylocks theory of not too hot, not too cold – trying to be “just right”…we’ll see.

Clearly, the new management at WOIO/WUAB realized that the station’s lone true amount of ratings success happened during the Bill Applegate/Steve Doerr era. Not only did Raycom’s past attempt at micromanaging not work, their stripping away of any part of the “Action News” resulted in a product that was not unique.

It’s not a defense of the controversies that surrounded “Action News,” nor were they dominant in the ratings (competitive at 11pm, yes, but WKYC or WEWS usually won that timeslot). But people like Ed Gallek, Sharon, Charlie Minn, Chuck Galeti, Carl Monday and Tanchek were distinctive, as was the pressroom presentation of the newscasts and aggressive promos. In a market based almost entirely on loyalty (WJW, anyone?) you need to carve a niche. Applegate/Doerr got it, and Raycom management didn’t.

And it wouldn’t shock me if, in a few weeks (just in time for May sweeps!), the “Action” quietly returns to the branding.

I doubt that they’ll bring back that name…too much bad juju with it.

It’s almost like they want a mix of “Action” and “Cleveland 19” with this hybrid branding – they want the feel of “Action” without the extra baggage.

AJ Colby is supposed to return on April 27th.

Hired Beth to fill in as rest of team was being overworked. Really???? Ch. 5 does it with 4 people.

“First, Fair, Everywhere” sounds waaaaayyyy too much like an Action News slogan, and with this market, people undoubtedly still think of it as “that Action News station” despite dropping the name and adopting a format that was a WKYC knockoff. Kinda like how people still call WJW “NewsCenter8” or WEWS “TV5 Eyewitness News.”

If there was any perceived baggage or bad juju with the name, it was felt by Raycom higher-ups and previous management at WOIO, none of which are around now.

Channel 5 also doesn’t have the amount of news on everyday as WJW.

It’s not that much different. And usually if someone has to fill in or do extra hours, they then get more vacation time.

So we had severe weather roll in last evening. Close enough for me to go in the basement in Huron County with the Tornado Warnings.

    I flipped on 5, 8 and 19. Didn’t check 3.

Hands down 5 & 19 were the best. Mark and Shemeka were on 5. Jason, Jon and Kelly were on 19. The teams had a nice flow. Sometimes that is not always the case.

Beth was on 8 by herself and was not good. She was slow in getting info out, acted like she didn’t know what was going on etc.

And for those who are complaining all over social media about the coverage interrupting sports, GET OVER IT. People were injured in Shelby, Ohio. Structures were damaged. Lives were at risk.

Could 19/43 end up with new anchor teams to go along with the new format soon?  I do like the new approach a lot better than “Cleveland 19,” which is still a lot better than “Hometeam 19/43.”

Does anyone know if Dawn Kendrick is still at Channel 3?  I saw her do a furniture commercial on another station weeks ago.

    She’s still there.

Obviously doing the ad was a side gig.

Maybe they can bring back Sharon Reid. Just kidding.

Speaking of Sharon Reed, she’s leaving WGCL in Atlanta, according to FTVLive!
