WKYC just hired a COMEDIAN to anchor 11pm news on Fridays! Wow, TEGNA is ruining newscasts!

    https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2019/06/wkyc-channel-3-hires-comedian-mike-polk-jr-possibly-as-friday-11-pm-anchor.html

I don’t think they’re actually gonna put Polk behind the desk as a legit anchor.

He’ll make appearances and do his “man on the street” schtick and parodies, but he won’t be a hard news anchor.

Methinks the line about him anchoring the news was just Polk (or his people with his blessing) pulling legs.

TEGNA hired Reese Waters – a comedian – to anchor WUSA’s morning newscast… WUSA, a CBS affiliate in a top 10 market. Plus Sara Shookman was recently a part of a test project with Reese for an experimental newscast.

It’s actually very likely that Mike Polk will be an anchor, and that is very sad.

Recorded in Ultra Stereo, the ultimately superior cousin to Normal Stereo!

from FTVLive. Com   some are wondering where another Anchor is in Cleveland and why isn’t he on the air?

Are we moving more and more toward entertainment and away from hard news? That’s the way it seems.

The hard core traditional news lovers are mostly age 55+, and that has never been a major advertiser demo target.

So, hey: why not? Gotta try to stay competitive some way, even if it means taking risks.

Just read on Facebook that Allison Brown is out at FOX 8. Not sure where she is heading.

Lauren Brill, who was a sports reporter for WEWS TV 5 for the last five years, has left to go to Miami (yes…she took her talents to South Beach), and to run her own website called “The Unsealed”.

As it sits right now, Derek Forrest remains the main weeknight sportscaster, with Jon Doss on weekends.

With football season inching closer, covering the Browns (with whom TV 5 is the official TV partner), OSU, and high school, WEWS will probably be adding a new face soon to help shore up the ranks in time for the pigskin to start flying.

Whether it was by her choice or management’s design Lauren rarely appeared on air anyway. (That was amusing vjm1, about her taking her talents to South Beach.) Channel 5 could use an Andy Baskin or 2 in the sports dept. with football season approaching. I think you’re right, they’re going to have to add at least one person unless they plan on shifting someone’s duties and have them covering sports as well as their regular beat.

I wouldn’t say “rarely” appeared on-air – she was on-air a good bit during her stint.

Heck, for a spell last year, she was the only sportscaster at TV 5 until Forrest and Doss came in.

That’s what I meant. When Baskin got canned and the other pregnant woman left Lauren Brill was almost the entire sports dept. at channel 5. She had to be on the air then, somebody had to do the segment. But once they brought in new hires  her time on camera was cut back to almost never. I have no idea if that’s how she preferred it or if it was the station’s call about her air time.

Talk about 3 for 3 – WKYC has just in the last couple of weeks brought in 3 new faces for their newscasts:

    1. Investigative reporter Rachael Polansky – coming up from WBBH NBC 2 in Fort Meyers, Florida.

    2. Former Plain Dealer reporter/columnist Mark Naymik, who will also serve as an investigative reporter

    3. Stephanie Haney, who was a reporter for Daily Mail TV comes aboard as an entertainment/feature reporter. She’s from Canton, so she brings some NEO cred.

This is added on to the fairly recent hires of Jay Crawford and Mike Polk Jr.

Here’s FOX 8 showing a preview of their new set, which is to be unveiled on Monday to viewers:

I so hope “new graphics/sound packs” means “goodbye, weird basic-looking hexagons.” It’d be a shame to get that new studio (are they all sharing the same desk again, and why even have the couch? They only used it for half an hour…) and keep the same graphics set.

Also, I’ve been meaning to ask: Is keeping Patty Harken behind a desk part of the ‘new’ Fox 8 In The Morning, or is it just temporary until she goes back up in SkyFox like the old days?

Will they still have the Dick Goddard Weather Center?

Yes…they used it all throughout the big remodel.
