With growing speculation that Sinclair is thinking of buying out or merging with Tribune, how will this affect the Cleveland market? Tribune owns 8 now and if sold would become Sinclair. Sinclair could then put new diginets on 8 and possibly axe Antenna TV. Also rumors that Sinclair wants CW stations. If 55 stays through repack, Winston Broadcasting could make fortune selling to Sinclair, especially with the new encoders.March 3, 2017 at 6:51 pm #172993
I wouldn’t be surprised if 8 and 55 end up together in some way.March 3, 2017 at 6:53 pm #172994
What about Meredith owning 8 (maybe 55 too)? Could CBS also make a play for 55?
If Meredith purchases 8, maybe they can bring Sharon Reed back to Cleveland. She currently works for WGCL in Atlanta.March 3, 2017 at 8:12 pm #172996
Anything could happen with the repack and new assignments. We should find out soon what’s going on.March 15, 2017 at 11:29 am #173233
Its looking more likely Sinclair will buy WJW per New York Post article. With it now known 55 and 61 staying through repack, it wouldn’t surprise me if they also make a play for one of those stations.March 15, 2017 at 5:58 pm #173236
Update! Wow if you are in Seattle if deal is really approved then KOMO4 and Q13 Fox could be under the same ownership.March 15, 2017 at 7:07 pm #173242

Not so fast we have not heard of the FCC response yet.March 15, 2017 at 8:15 pm #173245
I wouldn’t be surprised if the FCC approves it.
Also, if 55 does say no, could Sinclair make a play for 61 if Univision wants to sell?March 15, 2017 at 8:24 pm #173247
I’m thinking will make bids on 55 and 61 IF they buy WJW8. They could make that station their CW and have something like this:
8.4 This TV
55 or 61.1 CW
.4 Light TVMarch 18, 2017 at 7:26 am #173291
Fox is trying to stop the merger, and Nexstar is also looking into the Tribune stations:March 19, 2017 at 7:25 pm #173303
Fox is trying to stop the merger, and Nexstar is also looking into the Tribune stations:
That’s crazy for Nexstar to now be rumored to get some of the Tribune stations especially when they just got Media General recently.
A more logical way to see this is get “Mission Broadcasting”, “Marshall Television” to get the license of some of the Tribune stations if that’d even to be believed.March 19, 2017 at 9:16 pm #173304
Personally, I don’t really want Sinclair to buy the local Tribune station. Looks like it could be stopped. Maybe one of the smaller companies mentioned by Bill Recto could buy WJW, that would be nice.March 20, 2017 at 11:32 pm #173319
From what I have heard about Nexstar, if they were to get their hands on WJW, a lot of the long-familiar faces would probably be “retiring” soon after.
When they recently merged with General Media, the meat cleavers came out and the gutting began. They are all for the stockholders, and not the Channel 8 legacy.April 21, 2017 at 11:46 am #174082
Rumors are heating up again, especially with the cap changed yesterday.April 21, 2017 at 3:46 pm #174090
Apparently Sinclair has a deal with Bonten Media and they just got it for $240 million. Who knows if Sinclair will even get Tribune now this other deal has been resolved.
