Note this deal includes WTMJ and WKTI the stations that recently moved from Scripps to Good Karma.
Wisconsin-based Morgan Murphy Media is part of a local investment group that will acquire 10kW News WTMJ-AM (620) and 14kW Country WKTI-FM (94.4) in Milwaukee. The company announced it would join Good Karma Brands in the venture. Good Karma Brands founder and CEO Craig Karmazin said in July the company would purchase and operate the radio stations from E.W. Scripps Co.
“Craig and his team at Good Karma Brands truly understand what it means to serve a local community,” said Morgan Murphy Media Executive VP/COO Brian Burns. “We are excited to be in business with a group of people we’ve known for years who have an outstanding track record of success.”
Milwaukee native and local broadcasting veteran Steve Wexler will run the group as VP/Market Manager. He’ll oversee WTMJ and WKTI, in addition to 540 ESPN, ESPN Digital, the Wisconsin Sports Awards and the Tundr a Trio. He’s expected to assume his new role when the purchase is complete.
Among its other properties, Morgan Murphy owns two TV stations elsewhere in the state (Madison’s WISC–which is arguably the company’s flagship property–and LaCrosse’s WKBT), plus Madison magazine and some radio stations on the Wisconsin side of the Dubuque metro (i.e., around Platteville and Lancaster).
Considering how Craig Karmizan has operated Good Karma, this makes sense. He’s never operated a station with this level of infrastructure like WTMJ and cannot afford to skimp on any aspect of their operations.
Not that I’m suggesting that Morgan Murphy winds up with Good Karma outright, but it’s funny how Good Karma has an FM sports talker in Madison – Morgan Murphy’s home market – that largely simulcasts the programming of WAUK 540 Milwaukee, which will be merged into the operations of WTMJ/WKTI under management appointed by both companies (Morgan Murphy apparently signed off on Steven Wexler taking over as OM for all three stations).
Recorded in Ultra Stereo, the ultimately superior cousin to Normal Stereo!
