Are there any updates about this???

1160 has been running a dead carrier for the past few days…So…They must be testing or modifying it…

It appears that WAIX is coming back from the great beyond:

    https://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/cdbsmenu.hts?context=25&appn=101803130&formid=911&fac_num=41582

    REASON FOR ENGINEERING STA REQUEST

THE LICENSEE IS PREPARING TO RESUME BROADCASTING ON THIS STATION THAT HAS BEEN SILENT PURSUANT TO STA. HOWEVER, TESTING HAS DISCLOSED THAT THERE IS A TRANSMITTER PROBLEM, APPARENTLY AN ISSUE WITH CONTROL AND AN AMPLIFIER. THE STATION IS LICENSED AT 5 KW DAYTIME, BUT PENDING REPAIRS CAN OPERATE AT ONLY 4 KW. WE SEEK AN STA TO RESUME OPERATIONS UTILIZING THE LICENSED SITE, BUT WITH LESS THAN LICENSED DAYTIME POWER. NIGHTTIME OPERATION IS UNAFFECTED AS THE TRANSMITTER CAN OPERATE AT LICENSED NIGHTTIME POWER. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SILENT STA EXPIRES AT 12:01 A.M. ON MAY 15, 2019, SO WE REQUEST EXPEDITIOUS GRANT OF THIS REQUEST.

However, if you look up info for WPTR 1240 or WABY 900, both seem to be approaching the final twilight as licensed stations on May 15th and will enter the Ancient Modulation graveyard to join WDCD 1540.

To quote Bob Green “it ain’t right. How do you deal?”

Thanks for the info. Star Saratoga (owned by Border Media) now has a Schuylerville NY phone, 518-933-2000, but you’ll only get sent to voicemail.

Do they really need an STA? I was under the impression that if it was technically impossible to operate at full power, you could operate at reduced power for up to I believe 10 days, then you had to notify the FCC if it was to be longer?

It does sound like they can’t really meet their obligation, so they are attempting a dance with smoke and playing cards. The FCC has given them a year to 5/15/19 to start up, and now they suddenly say “do we have permission to air?” ! But the FCC has already issued a Mandate to hit the airwaves, and the station’s new request blatantly says that they can do it. Unless they really can’t, which we’ll find out Wednesday, when we will hear 1160, or in the alternative, their license maybe goes up in flames.

My goodness you guys have been having some speculation fun in here!

Hi I’m Ricki Lee and I guess from today we techincally are running WAIX!

So here’s some clarity for you guys so you can stop guessing.

WAIX returned to the air on May 7, 2019. Prior to this when the site was inspected, we found that the transmitter had some slight issues getting to 5KW so we filed an STA to allow us to run the station at 4KW whilst the lovely folks at GatesAir send us the parts to repair the transmitter, which will allow it to return to full power. We’ve been working on this deal with Empire for a very long time. Now we wait for the FCC to approve the sale and complete the acquisition.

We added the Star branding and test transmission audio to the station yesterday and we officially took over the station via LMA this morning. Our attentions now turn to building out new studios and the FM translator site. We hope to have the FM turned on by mid summer if all goes well.

PS: @Johnnie Radio – That is indeed our phone number. But if you didn’t block your number when calling it or left us a message, we’d call you back 😛 haha.

You’re a class act, Ricki Lee.  I don’t recall such an owner’s response in the past. / By the way, my only question on my phone call would have been “how’s it going there”. I mostly wanted to find out if there was indeed a phone connection to the station. / I hope you’ll continue to read this very interested site, and I may even call some day. I had also filled out the survey, mentioning smooth jazz. The last Saratoga station had a Sunday morning program with Walt Adams. Thank you for updating all of us today. / My immediate questions would be if there will be announcers, and whether you are re-building the Malta facility or instead are relocating. Perhaps you might also transmit your morning show on WRGR to WAIX.  / I would call your new station the best in the North Country, I haven’t heard so much life on the local airwaves  since the mid-1960’s.  But you were probably used to that in the UK!  Blessings. 🙂

To answer your questions Johnnie, no we are not taking over the studios in Malta. We’ve actually secured space in downtown Saratoga Springs and will shortly commence a build out of brand new digital studios. Yep! With local and live announcers where we can, and the use of smart new technology when we cannot.

I’m actually very aware of Walts Jazz show and actually we’ve opened up a diaolog to him and many other people who do specialist shows to see if we can add a bit more flavor to our format.

I may appear on the air in some time slot, but I don’t think my morning show from WRGR will feature. The two stations have very difference audiences and we intend to cater for them separately to ensure we serve our local communities the best we can.

We’ll share more news as and when we have it! Feel free to reach out directly via email (that goes to anyone) if you have any other questions.

    My questions to Ricky Lee:

    1) Do you plan on having local news?

    2) Might you have a local talk show?

    3) Back in 1975, I accompanied the engineer for then WMVI 1170AM 250 watts to the transmitter site to provide assistance, (He was a professor at HVCC, and I was one of his students). Back then, the TX was in the city of Mechanicville Water Dept. building. I believe that has since moved to another bldg. But I am under the impression that the same 140ft tower is being used. Unless the ground system has been updated, it must be in poor shape. Once you get your build-out on new studios, are you looking to relocate the TX to a closer and better site to Saratoga Springs?

    4) Seeing that Mechanicville has another license (104.5) might you look to change the COL to Saratoga Springs?

    5) Do you plan on keeping the same callsign?

Good luck and I hope you are successful with your new acquisition.

    Craig

For ease Craig, here’s my answers
    1) Yes indeed we do!
    2) We have no intention of moving to a talk format from music. We may if it fits in well decide to run specialist talk shows or one offs.
    3) To the best of my knowledge, the tower site was completely rebuilt when it moved from the water plant. The tower is in great shape, the building has seen better days but it isn’t by far the worst I’ve seen. The TX is in need of repair but everything else is shipshape.
    4) We have no intent to change the City of License.
    5) We will be changing the call letters!

Thank you for the reply. As time goes on, you will get a feel for  what sells and what doesn’t. At some point you might want to try a once a week talk show with public officials, health professionals, civic leaders and others as guests. You might also become involved with the upcoming racing season. Good luck, Saratoga Springs needs a station promoting it.

Your wish is to be granted. We’re changing the call letters to WSSV which should take effect on Memorial day!

Although I’d love to see the old WSSV calls make their way to 1160 at some point.
