Good Karma CEO Craig Karmazin was on the Really Big Show this morning to go over the new lineup at WKNR (effective 1/3/17)

    6-9a – Mike & Mike

9a-1p – RBS (Tony Rizzo, Aaron Goldhammer, Casey Kulas)

    1-3p – Browns Daily

    3-5p – Emmitt Golden & Je’Rod Cherry

5-6p – The Insiders (Goldhammer with Tony Grossi & Brian Windhorst)

6-7p –  ESPN Cleveland Tonight (recap show with Dave Scozen)

7-9p – Munch on Sports (Mark “Munch” Bishop & Matt Fontana)

9p-6a – ESPN Radio (with Greg Brinda doing his Tribe/Cavs postgame shows)

    What this tells me :

Goldhammer was getting his lunch handed to him in the afternoons (with Mike Trivisonno, Alan Cox, and Bull & Fox owning that spot in the talk department), so – because as program director he could (Thanks, dad) – he ran back to his “safe space” on RBS.

The 5p show is basically a showcase for Grossi and Windhorst to be the NFL/NBA (respectively) experts that they are, the 6p show may as well be the “Here’s what you missed on RBS Hour”, and Munch is Munch.

As RBS goes, so does the Galleria…the old “put all your eggs in 1 basket” theory – and this schedule proves it.

Nice to see Matt Fontana getting a co-hosting shot.  He deserves it.

No, he really doesn’t. Cherry is .. wow .. I don’t even know what to say for his live reads. Wow. And Kulas is .. I don’t .. what can I .. man, that dude is BAD radio. Matt .. it’s stumbling. Incorrect. Bad voice .. that’s the major thing with Kulas and Matt. There’s nothing they can do about it. They were born that way. But, those people should not be on a major market radio station. I’m sorry guys but you just chose the wrong field. There’s many things that are important and vital to a radio station that does not include being on the air .. please do those things. It’s not your gig, guys. You just were not blessed with it.

They make such a huge thing out of not subscribing to the Arbitron ratings and I have seen SO MANY places say “Well, we don’t KNOW what their ratings are because they do not subscribe”. I call “Mularkey” on that .. there’s another word I won’t use but .. check me if I am wrong here, people. I was 28 years on the air in Northeast Ohio commercial broadcast radio. And I remember that big advertising agencies GET THE RADIO RATINGS .. period .. period period. Because they HAVE to know what the ACTUAL .. REAL .. ratings are for allllll the radio stations in the market so they can make informed decisions. They are an ad agency. That’s what they do. It costs them an arm and a leg but .. it is the cost of doing business.

So, you can *SAY* they don’t subscribe and there are no ratings because of that but ..

.. don’t you guys think that there*ARE* actual Cleveland radio ratings some place that is the ENTIRE picture of the market for ad agencies and such to use? They need to know this.

Nate would know this, I bet. He’s .. generations of radio knowledge in that dude. Generations. Wish he’d start his own blog to replace the old “Northeast Ohio Media” blog-thingee the guy quit doing.

The facts are the facts .. you can’t change them. The ratings are the ratings are the ratings. Period. And for 28 years of my life .. the ratings would come out .. The Book .. and people got fired and people LEFT THE INDUSTRY. Out of work, out of a job, out of a career. Even actual homeless people because of ratings. I rode that lightning for 28 years, man. The Book .. and it is HARD. HARD. It’s cold and it is harsh and it is not shaded with “Participation Trophies”. So, that’s why I am speaking this way. It’s real. And real broadcast radio that is worth Big Bank is .. commerce in the arts. And Emmitt Golden and Casey Kulas and Matt Fontana .. it’s .. well .. the ratings and The Book are .. cold and colorless and real. Real. It’s a helluva thing, man. But it is cash.

So, I feel very, very confident that Ohio School of Broadcasting sounding Emmett of “The Golden Boys” .. is so very .. BAD .. BAD .. just .. bad .. on the radio. Why does he LAUGH like that? It sounds like a broadcasting school. Like, people that never, ever should be on the air. That’s what Emmitt Golden sounds like. It’s .. dude, go find a convenience store or a tire store or something .. that is not an undesirable vocation. It is .. honorable. But .. GET OFF THE RADIO, MAN .. you can’t guffaw for three hours day in and day out  … every 8 minutes you are on the air. It’s broadcasting school stuff. Go sell tires, man.

But, with Goldhammer and that Emmitt Golden .. I bet those dudes were .. HAMMERED .. completely HAMMERED in The Real Ratings I spoke of .. and they had to get that train wreck out of there. So, they went cultural with Cherry and Golden. They might be able to spin a demographic inner city demo or something? Dunno. I can’t believe that black people would accept Emmitt Golden as a broadcaster that is worth actual CASH. I mean, it sounds like somebody in their bedroom with a Mr. Microphone in North Ridgeville or something. That’s Emmitt Golden. Go sell tires, dude. It’s honorable. But get the hell off the air.

“The Golden Boys” never really rose to a level of junior high school Mass Media class.

    It was extreme, man. EXTREME.

It was flat out friggin’ embarrassing.

Quote  I’ve always maintained WKNR not subscribing to Arbitron was them basically sticking their fingers in their ears and saying “la-la-la-la, we can’t hear you!”  They just don’t want their anemic non-RBS ratings out in public.  The Bratty Bunch just want to play in their little sandbox and pretend everything is A-OK in the Galleria.  Hammer knew he was getting smoked in PMD, so he went running to his blankie, which is riding Rizzo’s coattails on RBS.

This morning there was some announcement about Casey Kulas leaving the show.

I can’t stomach Rizzo anymore and I used to be one of his biggest fans. But, the guy is just .. completely out of control with this entitlement attitude .. free food .. free cars .. free this free that .. it’s torrential. That and every four seconds saying “I’ve done this for 30 years” and he just turned me off. So, I don’t listen to RBS anymore.

I do scan over this amusing Reddit page:

They said something about the producer of Rizzo & Goldshower .. uh .. Goldhammer’s producer leaving, fired, ejected from the planet ..

As long as the station is making money, then things should be OK for everyone involved until the owners decide to move in a different direction.

Quote Has to do with production at the Q.  Remember, he has had a longtime side gig as the visiting team radio engineer at the Q for Cavs games for several years now.

Well, reading between the lines there, vjm .. visiting radio engineer is .. not a very steady gig. Couldn’t pay all that much and you get summers completely off. Maybe there is something else to it. Here in Detroit there were two sports radio stations and one flipped. Now, there is one. CBS 92.3 is pretty doggone good. I can’t see how KNR can keep this up. It’s like a scam .. the whole station .. they do live reads for two and a half minutes .. and THEN go to a six minute spot break. And come out of the spot break .. *WITH A LIVE READ*! There must be 74 live reads every show. It’s gotten to the point where it is like a big infomercial with some BBQ and rasslin’ talk sprinkled in. It’s rough, man. Rough. A Program Director is supposed to fight for programming and Goldhammer is just getting RAPED by the sales manager there. He needs to freak completely out on somebody and grab the reins. An unchecked sales department will destroy a radio station. It’ll just eat itself.

I know they don’t subscribe to Arbitron but .. if you are an ad agency in Cleveland .. and you GOTTA know who is listening to what … no matter if they subscribe or not .. I gotta guess that Rizzo and Goldhammer are probably  .. maybe .. even with Baskin & Phelps on 92.3. And the rest of it .. is just HAMMERED in the ratings for the rest of the dayparts.

I can’t see how they can sustain that. Eventually the sponsors have to figure out they are part of a massive scam .. no matter how effective their sales person is. Common sense would have to kick in at some point with local businesses. I know they “stardust” them with the personalities on the air giving them personal treatment and mentioning them incessantly but .. you’d think a smart advertiser would figure out this is just .. A SCAM . .front to back. Scam.

Maybe that’s what Kulas figured out.

But, the fact is .. right now .. there’s gobs and gobs and gobs of commercials. And the live reads are the worst of them. They just go on and on and on and on and on. It’s like “DAMN .. just SHUT .. *UP* about the friggin’ chicken at Acme fresh market”.

    Ya know?

I’m not making this stuff up.

Quote KNR always has (in the Good Karma era)  been very ad heavy.  I can’t prove it, but I always had a theory that “Joe Bee” (he of the magic bee pollen) has an ownership stake in Good Karma…KNR/KNR 2 are the only places that plug his all purpose cure-all capsules, and they are carpet bombed with those ads.  Regarding Kulas, he has said that his new gig at the Q puts more work on his plate (and assuming more cash in his pocket), so I don’t think there’s anything sinister there.  Remember, Bruce Hooley also recently left to for an AMD gig in Columbus, where he makes his home.

Munch is leaving WKNR for iHeart and will be heard on different stations in Ohio, including 1350 AM.

The changes at WKNR are really just an indication of growing issues in all of radio & traditional mass media: declining advertising revenues caused in no small way by the incredible growth of ad dollars shifting to the internet.

This isn’t an exciting topic for radio and TV fans. For them, any problems at radio stations they feel is all about their opinion of the quality (or lack of quality) of specific stations and shows.

Bottom line is ad buys and dollars in traditional media ARE down, especially with large national & regional advertisers. Even though the internet is the ultimate audience and advertiser fragmentation hole, the fact that 2/3rds of adults are on line every day has advertisers….large, and the smarter smaller/local ones trying to figure out what works and how they can put ad dollars on the web…where millions and millions of consumers are now spending a ton of time daily.

This puts pressure on local radio and TV stations….and they cut back personnel to make up for lost ad revenues. Good or bad…whatever any of us personally think…the web has changed our world..and many traditional advertising-supported media. Even if cume audience is as big as ever, time spent on any particular traditional media IS down…and to on-line. You may hate hearing this, but research says it’s true. And, it’s just getting started.

A station as dependant on sales as WKNR is… should not lose their top sales representative like this. Munch was at WKNR for a little over a decade and did pretty much anything and everything.

Couple that with the surprising absence of local non-postgame programming of any sort, and I’m not sure what Craig K’s long game is here. Is he just waiting for Entercom’s purchase of CBS Radio to be completed in a few months?

Recorded in Ultra Stereo, the ultimately superior cousin to Normal Stereo!
