All Access reports that the venerable  Spanish language talk/brokered/music station will be one of 10 owned by Univision to broadcast their new sports network. Expected to start next year, it will compete with ESPN Deportes.

The Spanish language ESPN Deportes stations, such as WEPN 1050 AM generally have very poor ratings. Does it make sense to start another network of Spanish language sports stations? Perhaps the expected strong emphasis on soccer coverage will help the new Univision Deportes.

WADO has a recent overall rating of .8. WEPN AM, with a somewhat stronger signal, is at .2.

What kind of play-by-play will Univision Deportes have?

I thought ESPN Deportes had national Spanish-language broadcasts of Major League Baseball and the World Series.

I thought WEPN-1050 had Spanish-language broadcasts of some of New York’s pro teams.

Univision Deportes better get national Spanish-language play-by-play rights to major U.S. sports if they want to compete.

After all, it’s platy-by-play that brings most listeners to sports radio, regardless of language.

As expected, WADO 1280 AM is now carrying Univision Deportes. Also as expected, it dives deep into the world of soccer.
