I drove past the former WCKL studio/transmitter site yesterday ( now used by I-Heart Media). Tower 3 was gone, but the other two remained. I figured the other tower not used by WCTW and the WHUC translator will be coming down soon. It is nothing but a liability that must remain lit. Speaking of WCKL I noticed the FCC once again granted WCKL’s application for STA -silent dated back to June 9. So, this sorry saga will continue at least until then. I have to think the FCC’s comments in dismissing another stations STA silent in a different situation applies here. “Transmitting briefly once a year does not serve the public interest , as nobody knows to tune to this frequency”. Of course the fact the WCKL has not actually been on the air in over two years, and Brian Dodge flat out lied to the FCC is another matter.

I saw it back in August when I was in Olana State Park for a hike and I saw two transmitters instead of 3 while watching that view. Pretty sad to say.

Look under correspondence, and imported letter dated today. It’s 36 pages long, and I haven’t digested all the ramifications, but it looks like what y’all have suspected (that Mr. Dodge was actually behind many of these applications) is true.

    Lance did.

    TL;DR –
** Brian Dodge fessed up to everything, and the FCC appears to have thrown the book at him.
** WCKL and the two LPFM applications have been deleted. They’re dead, Jim.
** He can proceed to sell the three translators to Costa-Eagle but will pay a $100,000 fine.
** WWNH gets a license but he has only six months to prove that everything is on the up-and-up.

Recorded in Ultra Stereo, the ultimately superior cousin to Normal Stereo!

    From the all access today

The FCC has reached a Consent Decree settling the complicated case of BRIAN DODGE, who has admitted to filing several applications as far back as 1982 under pseudonyms and some with fake addresses to conceal his involvement with the applications. The settlement includes a $100,000 fine, cancellation of the license of WCKL-A/CATSKILL, NY and two LPFMs, and dismissal of his petitions for reconsideration of two FM application dismissals, and he will get short-term renewals for his FM translators, grants of the sale of three translators, and a conditional grant of the license for WWNH-A/MADBURY, NH.

The licenses and applications under the names HARVEST BROADCASTING (WWNH), HARVEST BROADCASTING ASSOCIATION (W249AW/LEBANON, NH; W265AM and W261CB/NORWICH-WEST LEBANON, VT; W240AK/LEBANON, NH; W228AU/NORTH BENNINGTON, VT; W228AZ/BERNARDSTON, MA; W257AU/ST. JOHNSBURY, VT; W232AJ/GREENVILLE, NH; W288AN/WEST BRATTLEBORO, VT; W259AB/MARLBORO, VT), FAMILY BROADCASTING AND MEDIA, INC. (WCKL), GRANITE STATE EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION, INC. (applications for new noncommercial educational FMs at NEW CASTLE, NH and ROCHESTER, NH), THE LOVE RADIO CHURCH, INC. (WPNI-A/AMHERST, MA, now deleted), HILLTOWN CHRISTMAS STOCKING (WDOE-LP/WESTHAMPTON, MA), and CITIZENS FOR A BETTER HILLTOWNS (new LPFM at WILLIAMSBURG, MA) are being changed to designate BRIAN DODGE d/b/a HARVEST BROADCASTING ASSOCIATION as the licensee, permittee, or applicant.

This saga has been going on for nearly 30 years. Brian Dodge and his various names came to my attention when he purchased WCKL in 2012 according to FCC filings ( it seems longer). To say it is about time the FCC caught up to him is an understatement.
But except for the remaining properties in NH he is gone, WCKL is officially gone for good, so that is a good thing. Should he still walk away with a nice payout even after he pays $100K in civil penalties?

Not only were the calls WCKL deleted from the FCC as of November 3, but the second of the three former towers for the station was demolished last week. http://www.thedailymail.net/news/article_00c45ec2-a244-11e6-9105-139a22a08fb8.html.
Only the middle tower also used for FM operations WCTW and a WHUC translator remain. End of story.

That’s sad! Hate to see the WCKL call letters go, but I don’t know where they can find a way put park the WCKL call letters, maybe in another state or a town. And speaking of WCKL, remember back in 2003 when the Black United Fund bought the station from the defunct Concorde Media? That was where the station went dark. I found this article from 14 years ago.

    http://www.registerstar.com/news/article_9d18d6d1-e661-5c42-8d3b-86a9a8395691.html

WCKL was a pretty good station playing MOR standards from WW1 and I remember Chick Watkins doing middays and I remember him and the same guy that he usually carried on WMTR in Morristown, NJ back in 2001 before it went oldies. By around 2003 or 2004, the station was simulcasting WBPM’s former oldies station “Cool. 92.9” as part of the “Keeping the License Alive” promotion, and then around 2007, it was simulcasting WCZR and WCTW at the time until Brian Dodge bought the station around 2009 or so and then went to “Family 560” until 2013 or 2014 and then by October of this year, WCKL is no longer a station.

In tribute to the legacy of WCKL, I found only one short clip, and this from 20 years ago back in 1986 when WCKL was an AM music station at the time playing AC. You’ll hear a station ID and n hourly newscasts from API. Enjoy!

Just to bump this thread, because this topic is 2 years old, but just to give you an update that the call letters WCKL, which was originally in Catskill, is now parked in Chicago as WCKL-FM where it is now running a Christian AC format known as “K-Love” where it took over from WLUP-FM when it was a classic rock station for years as “The Loop”. That was a few weeks ago. The FM version of WCKL was originated in Starke, FL when it was on 88.3, just to give you proof.

Still dark-  I check everything time I blow through town.

That darkness became permanent at least a year and a half ago. The towers are gone save for the one used by former FM sister station WCTW. The FCC canceled Brian Dodges license because of numerous violations.
The calls WCKL are now on a religious station in Chicago.

Thanks Warren.   I was wondering, but not enough to do some on-line digging.  I figured the next owner with champagne wishes and caviar dreams might set up shop at one point.
