Just filed a new app., so I can relocate the antenna and transmitter to the studio building in Selma.  Waiting now to get it approved, so I can start building.  Things have been a bit hectic in my home.  My father is now recovering from a recent knee replacement surgery, for those who don’t visit the other site and wasn’t aware.  Glad things are going right on this.

I’m excited over this new LPFM start up.  Not too thrilled with the content.  I wanted all CCM.  However due to other factors, beyond my own control, the musical content will feature songs for both the young and old populace here.  Sorry about that.

I hope to begin broadcasting before December 2016.

The rebirth of my hometown is fixing to happen.

    Excited over it.

When you say “young and old populace,” does that mean that you’ll now be including music for Selma’s majority African-American community?

Here’s where I’m taking the radio station.  My goal is to cater to the underserved Contemporary Christian, Southern, Bluegrass, Country, Hymns, Instrumental and Worship Gospel style and audience.  If you’re hinting for me to do another presentation of mass choir/Spiritual based tunes, not happening.  A sixth presentation would be an overkill here.  Someone would have to take a big hit and I would be the one.  By me playing those songs, that would put me in direct competition with the other five stations who are already doing it.  Besides I made promise to a local radio friend, myself and God that I wouldn’t copy everyone else on purpose.  Most of my presentation is going to be musical in nature, with six local Church services, being heard. (3 on Saturdays and 3 on Sundays)

“Mass choir” style black Gospel has never been my suggestion. I’m sorry you still don’t seem to understand that.

Over a year ago, you explained that your vision was to reach the whole of Selma. Sort of a “reconciliation through music” mission to impact the youth and young adults that are the future of your community. The vision, again as I understood it, was to find a way for all sides to see a common ground in Christ. The goal to that common ground seemed to be reaching out to youth and young adults through the varied forms of contemporary music within the Body of Christ.

Then came a change. Mom and Dad wouldn’t help fund the radio station unless you let Mom program six hours of southern gospel each day. Questions were raised, suggestions were made. You seemed to understand that the addition of older skewing music would negatively impact your vision. The southern gospel went away. Then came back. Then went away again. You said they’d just have to understand that you were following God’s vision.

IIRC, at about that time I asked that if someone were to write a check for the full cash amount you needed to build out WPJB-LP, would you be willing to guarantee that a portion of your broadcast schedule would present Christian music targeting the younger African-American audience (not the older focused traditional black Gospel you describe above). You were adamant, almost angry, in your quick response of “no.” You clearly said it wasn’t you vision for the radio station.

And there is where you lost me. You’ve never fully seemed able to explain why including artists like Lecrae, Derek Minor or Shonlock — artists who easily fit into what you claim your vision is for WPJB, artists that will reach the younger African-American audience — are unacceptable, while you seem so willing to turn your back on the vision God gave to include your Mom’s southern Gospel favorites solely because they won’t support you otherwise.

I’ve said this before. If God gave you the vision you originally claimed for Christian radio in Selma, God will also give you the means to make it happen. Getting that construction permit was the easy part. Since the grant, many of us have shared ideas on how you can reach that goal. You’ve likely ignored ninety percent of those ideas. And at least to me, you appear to have turned your back on God’s vision solely to take the easy way, and as it appears, a way of less conflict.

Dan, either God gave you that vision or He didn’t. If He didn’t, you’re wasting your time following the path you’ve chosen. Without Him, you’re working solely on your own power, selfishly pursuing the wrong road, justifying it by saying “but that’s where the support is coming from,” and setting yourself up for failure by playing music that at best might appeal to less than a quarter of the Selma population.

Conversely, if He did give you the vision you talked about years ago, I fear that you’re going to fail. Because if He did give you that vision, you’re not following through. You’re not doing the work needed, not pressing toward the goal of finding the way He wants to provide to make His vision happen, and simply taking the easy way and selling His vision short to avoid conflict with your parents and to not have to do the truly hard work needed to make His vision happen.

Please keep one other thing in mind. The majority of people who have offered support, ideas, questions and possible solutions on this website (and elsewhere) have no horse in this race. We have nothing to gain and nothing to lose. We simply see a Brother who appears to need and want help. We simply want to offer that help.

But always remember that those local broadcasters you make promises to, do have something to lose should you succeed. They have a potential loss of audience. Perhaps more importantly, they have a potential loss of revenue. That is an undeniable fact.

A side note. Consider how dramatically less response you get to your updates on both this and the other site.  There was a time that any of a dozen of us would jump in with encouragement, ideas, support. How many weeks now have you been writing updates here and elsewhere? Has there been that same level of response? Have you taken the time to ask why that is?

Bottom line, you like to talk about a “rebirth” of Selma. Remember one thing. Change isn’t going to come from the older residents. They’re the one’s who created the current situation.

Change…rebirth…can only come from young Selma. Those are the people who are the future of the community. Those are the people God wants to reach, to break down strongholds, to bring change, to bring rebirth. Those are the people you need to impact with WPJB-LP. To limit your programming to that small minority of the Selma community you now appear to target will only preach to the choir responsible for the mess.

Ask yourself. Do you really want to turn your back, settle for less than His best, and settle for what you’ve described today? Or is the God who gave you this vision big enough to give you the funds, equipment and support needed to make the fullness of His vision happen?

Sorry for misunderstanding you.  I’m glad you take up for the Christian Hip-Hop tunes too.  I love those songs and see nothing wrong with them.

Now with that being stated, here’s the reasons behind my hybrid mix idea.

My goal was to be a full time CCM player here.  I was going to fulfill a dream and use this radio station to help share the Gospel with the 18-54 year old crowd.  Over the past few years, my dreams were shattered.  People of all kinds started coming into the picture and told me what singers and styles they wanted me to play.  First it was just my mother.  I had no intentions of doing just for her.  However, when more people came along, they made their requests known too.  There was a few requests, these people kept giving me.  One by one, I kept hearing them say we want Bill Gaither, Southern, Bluegrass, Country, Hymns and Instrumental type songs.  Had some of these requesters to give me some of the CD’s they wanted to hear.  As time carried on, spoke with some radio people here.  One told me let me plant a seed into your head Dan.  If you do songs for the older folks, you’d fare better.  That’s where most of your support will come from.  I made a suggestion, to a former radio person and told him that I wanted to block out time for the Rock and Rap tunes.  He talked me out of it, saying Dan it would be a train wreck.  (Once worked for Moody, Mr. Bruce)  Some from my own family are still telling me, if I do some music for the older crowd, this radio station will perform very well.  The youth have no money to give you son.  Your financial support won’t come from them.  Their thinking is Selma doesn’t have enough of a market to support a full time CCM station.  I still contend it does.  With all those factors in play, going hybrid is where I’m starting.  I know that some will be offended by the presentation but I’m going give this idea a chance and see where God lead me.  If it works then I’ll keep it.  If not, then I’ll tweak the presentation. (With my own mother giving in, if I do go full time CCM)

Now concerning the Christian Rock and Rap idea.  Here was and still is my thinking on it.  If I played those songs between 9 P.M. and 3 A.M. daily, would this work or be a train wreck?  I want to run with this idea and prove to the former Moody person, that this will ultimately work.

Now if anyone wants to help me turn WPJB-LP into a full time CCM station, with the Rock and Rap tunes being heard from 9 P.M. till 3 A.M. and can convince me that God wants this, I welcome it.

Let’s talk about the Christian Rap idea too.  One local radio station tried to play some, on Friday and Saturday nights, for a spell.  That program was met with little support and much resistance.  The DJ was playing a head bobber by my good friend Mr. LeCrae (Not ashamed to call him that) and one person called that radio station and asked who’s that?  The DJ told the caller who it was and started the song over again.  The caller was not too happy with the song anyway.  He was an older person, that didn’t get the Ministry and music of that talented rapper, that I still love and respect to this day.

Help me Mr. Bruce and anyone else reading turn Jesus Radio into a full time CCM player.  I want it to still happen.  If you can help, let me know.  Pray hard that God will ultimately allow me to go full time CCM and leave the traditional tunes behind, on purpose.

I could easily help you bank the first year of WPJB if I only had a dollar for every time someone called to ask why whatever radio station I was working for didn’t play a certain song. Add another dollar for the times they’d follow up their request by saying and “all my friends want to hear it.”

But anyone who’s spent more than a few hours in a radio studio knows that’s never the truth. You can never depend on anecdotal information to program a radio station. There’s probably no scriptural reference to support that…other than maybe “the heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure…”

Your Mom, her friends, your friends, a local morning DJ or a one-time Moody employee…none of them were entrusted with the vision God gave you for WPJB. Just Dan Presley. And it is a trust. Out of all of Selma, He trusted only you to get it done. You’re unique. You’re chosen. That’s very special. You need to see it that way.

God is not going to give you His vision for Christian radio in Selma, only to have it be swayed by the words of man. If you truly know that God wanted you to launch a full-time CCM radio station, I think you can understand why you can’t let man sway you along the path.

Like it or not, those in your circle of influence can make mistakes. They can be influenced by emotion, by self-interest…consciously or not. They can only speak from their view, but their view is not God’s vision given only to you

And yes. I’m fully aware that some or all of us who respond to your questions online can equally be mistaken. But, as I said earlier, none of us stand to gain or lose from WPJB.

Dan, all of us need to learn to test everything by the Word. It’s not easy to do. I’ll admit that I fail at doing so far more times than I succeed.  No one else can do that for you. It’s up to you alone. But I wholeheartedly believe that if God said “go,” then I’d go. I’d put on those blinders, depend solely upon Him, test all with the Word, and not let anyone sway you in another direction.

Does that mean Christian rock or Christian hip-hop or current CCM or classic CCM? No…or yes…or maybe a little of all. Any objection someone might have offered about block programming WPJB likely resulted from not having a clear understanding of the vision God gave you for Selma. If you’re serious about being the meeting place where all of Selma can come to better understand others of their community, then it seems to me that you need a variety of music.

But when 75 percent of the community is African-American, and when your goal is being used of God to bring a rebirth of Selma, it seems to me that the younger your music focus the better. And yes, Christian hip-hop would be a part of that. Not so much for southern Gospel. Again, God didn’t give that vision to your folks, their friends or people their age. That’s part of Selma’s past. Part of what created the current situation needing the rebirth you talk about.

There was a time a few months back when you were rebuffed by someone in your church over a Tait song you chose to play prior to a Wednesday night fellowship. At that time, you seemed determined to make that event a reason to play Tait’s music even more on WPJB. Maybe not a great reason for that choice. But I mention it because it seems from your change in music direction that you’ve now decided that perhaps the person offended was right. Either way, a mistake.

You can’t let the winds of change influence how you bring God’s vision into being. It’s not easy but you need to find the confidence to run the race God has placed ahead of you. You need to depend solely upon Him for the strength and support to do so. You need to draw a line. If some are willing to stand with you, great. If they’re not willing to cross that line and join you, they were never with you. They were never part of God’s plan and provision.

You have to find the way to clearly stand for that first vision. You need to find the way to convey that vision to the Selma community. Not everyone will see it. If not, then shake the dust off your feet and move on to the person who does. I have no doubt that God has those persons already in place. But none of us online can find them. We’re not in Selma. It’s up to you and you only.

You need to ask yourself if you truly believe that God will favor WPJB if it remains outside of the vision He first gave you. You may get the radio station on the air. But if it’s of your own power and programmed to please man but outside of His will for WPJB, how long will it really last?

Praying you discover His true will for WPJB. So long for now.

You know what Dan…in reflection, I need to quit over-writing everything and learn to get to the point.

If God gave me a vision to open a Chinese restaurant, I sure wouldn’t listen to any person or persons who try to tell me He’s wrong and that I need to serve Mexican instead.

And if I had a storefront reserved and permits signed, I sure wouldn’t be surprised to have trouble finding equipment and funding had I made the mistaken choice to change from Chinese to Mexican anyway.

Until next time. Have a great weekend.

If it were me, and claiming no special word from God, I’d ask “What potential audience is within a mile of the transmitter?”. An LPFM isn’t going to give city wide coverage.

Great news everyone.  Fixing to start building around July the 5th.  Now working on making it happen.

In other news…Selma is fixing to get two more new radio stations.  Can’t tell you who’s bringing them or what the content will be yet.  Stay tuned and I’ll keep you posted.

Things are fixing to get very exciting here in my hometown.

Park Avenue is getting very exciting.  The new radio station is now officially in the building stage.  Just got my hands on the donated tower.  Will be resurrected sometime next week, behind my studio.  While I was claiming it, me and my builder discovered it had an antenna on it.  He’s now working on getting it tuned to 93.3 FM.  Once I get this other donated antenna, then I’ll have two.  One for current use and the other for a back up.

Hope to be on before December 2016.  Excited that things are now picking up for me and Jesus Radio.  Ready to begin broadcasting.

Sorry for being so late with Jesus Radio.  Things haven’t gone according to plan.  Next month, things are about to get busy on Park Avenue.  That’s when I plan on building this radio station.  The builder contacted me today and explained why he was behind.  Pray for his wife.  (Mrs. Bessie Hammond)  She’s having heart issues.  The doctors are now working on resolving it.  Hope she’ll fully recover and Mr. Keith will come and help me get this radio station on and running.  Look forward to bringing it to you, sometime in December or early January.

My builder just contacted me again.  His wife is getting better.  Hope to start building, within the next week or two.  If anyone reading can help me snag a transmitter, that would be awesome.  If it could be donated and in great condition that would be exciting indeed.
