Bill Recto…..I hope you are correct about separation within FOX corporate. And no, I don’t find any local station’s ownership on the high side, above the bar as far as ethics goes. I have seen 2 stories rushed to air that were inaccurate this month. One that took place less than a mile from my house. Channel 19 did get the story right. 3 and 8 blew it. I did not catch 5’s coverage. I just found FOX’s unrelenting promos of rigged reality shows during their local newscasts in my area VERY DISTASTEFUL. And I believe the philosophy of that company is SCREW YOU, VIEWER. If you don’t like it, we don’t care. Fox 8 could use a shake-up anyway. What are they, all in junior high school in the 60’s or 70’s? They color coordinate what they will wear? Style over substance. Fox 8 reeks of it.

I say its a News Director issue among the stations because in San Francisco KTVU the Fox O&O does some segments where there’s stories that aren’t really friendly to President Trump though.  See Fox O&O’s division does not air Must Run Segments from Fox News Channel though. They Leave the Pundit stuff to Fox News Channel. However the Bar is low on Fox is a true statement given that the jury is still out on the reforms though.

Lest we all forget, when WJW channel 8 was previously a Fox O&O they INCESSANTLY promoted American Idol during every hour of every newscast. A “FAKE” reality show was pounded down viewers throats during times viewers thought they would get to see “REAL” news. Instead 5 minute promos of a network show masqueraded as “NEWS”. I’m glad Sinclair is for now being shut out of our local market.

It was no different under Tribune.  Remember the “news stories” about WGN original series programming?  Hello WJW, these shows ran up against FOX 8 News @ 10. Why in the world would you want us to change the channel?

Can someone please change the title of the thread, as WJW is clearly not going to be owned by Sinclair Broadcasting and will more than likely be a Fox O&O again?

And Bill Recto, I like ya, but your posts on Sinclair are almost entirely unnecessary here. They don’t own any stations in Cleveland, and with the spinoff of WJW, won’t be in this market for a very long time to come.

I apologize for potentially coming off as snarky here.

I’m glad Sinclair is for now being shut out of our local market. But having Fox owning channel 8 is small consolation. They are the same people who bring you Laura Ingraham and Sean Hannity (if you watch their cable channel, that is). Ms. Ingraham belittles high school students that don’t want to go to school and get slaughtered. Sean Hannity says he will prove Seth Rich was murdered by Democrats for leaking documents. We’re still waiting for that proof. Meanwhile we find Sean bought many, many houses and the land they were on from an entity that was scamming the US Govt. and banks. The morality and ethical bar set by Fox is so low that an ant has a hard time limbo dancing under it.

It’s not like we hit the jackpot with WJW becoming a Fox O&O again.

Fox knew to keep the local news departments separate from Fox News proper. The standardized branding of 2006 was almost entirely cosmetic. Even then, Fox News’ prime-time clowns almost never factor into Fox Broadcasting, let alone the Fox O&Os. Neil Cavuto once did a straightforward 90-second business report that WJW aired during the 10pm news, and that was it with any Fox News connection besides basic reporter stand-ups.

Yes, I remember American Idol promos on WJW’s newscasts. It was fluff, but fed into the show being rather successful back then. I’d still favor that over the Sinclair “terrorist alert desk” scare pieces and D-list Russian commentator Boris Epysteyn gushing on about Trump 3x a day.

Is Fox the best station operator right now? No, but they are miles above a lot of other groups. And I’d sure as hell take them, warts and all, over a group like Sinclair Broadcasting.

re: “PlayStation Vue pulls Sinclair-owned local channels”

So streaming video is not immune the the same B.S. that cable and satellite has to go through with local station owners.

True I play the threads like a goose chase or wannabe news stringer though. But you’re right though in all your posts though on Sinclair.

With the Sinclair-Tribune deal hitting one HUGE snag after another, what could be the next options for WJW?  Could Fox still buy 8, or Sinclair goes after it in piecemeal, or a new company owning the station?

Obiviously, the Sinclair-Tribune merger fell through.  Now according to Variety, there are different companies looking at acquiring Tribune’s TV stations, including Tegna (who owns WKYC.  Imagine them and WJW becoming sister stations.)

Meanwhile, Tribune Media’s second try at an auction of its 42 TV stations and WGN America — following the implosion earlier this year of its $3.9 billion merger with Sinclair — has so far attracted the eye of private equity players, including Apollo and others in the Fox RSN race, as well as broadcasters such as Texas-based Nexstar Media and Tegna (formerly Gannett Broadcasting). Tribune is not the only station group on the block — Atlanta-based Cox Media Group is also said to be shopping its 14 stations — but it is the biggest prize up for grabs.

Tegna may have put out a feeler, but I’d be flabbergasted if they actually pulled the trigger.

    Tegna will ruin Fox 8.

It actually makes perfect sense for TEGNA to get Tribune, for several reasons:

    1. TEGNA would be netting news powerhouses in NYC (WPIX), Chicago (WGN-TV) and LA (KTLA). That’s far and away the prized jewel and the predominant reason why Sinclair wanted the company in the first place.
    2. Tribune has CW affiliates in Houston, Dallas and Washington, DC – all of which with no or minimal news presences – that can make duopoly partners with existing TEGNA stations in those markets.
    3. TEGNA will never – NEVER – own WJW. Or any of the seven stations Fox wanted in the first place, and will pony up the money on again. A second (and third?) suitor will have to emerge to acquire the six other stations in markets like NOLA, STL, Greensboro SC, Grand Rapids and Roanoke, assuming Fox doesn’t change the terms of their deal any further. One thing that is a certainty, the divestitures will be announced promptly, as everyone wants to be the opposite of Sinclair (see how quickly the divestitures came down with the Gray-Raycom merger).
    4. If you saw what Gannett did in Texas by buying both Belo and London – they have a massive portfolio in that state now – there’s precedence with TEGNA making a bid for Tribune. Just on a larger scale and strengthening their holdings in multiple existing markets.
    5. As they recently bought KFMB TV and radio, WGN/720 can be thrown in with the deal and TEGNA can leave it be.
