You can now add a D to both WHTX and WYCL. They died on February 14, if not earlier.
I just can’t believe that the 2013 sale to Nelson Cintron/Sagittarius never closed, and that Chris Lash d/b/a Whiplash Radio requested immediate deletion for both signals.

There’s one problem. The FCC already deleted the licenses for DWHTX and DWYCL.
Chris Lash is simply not going to request for them to be reinstated (which is the only way they can be), so that makes this court order almost entirely unenforceable.
It’s game over.

It’s NOT game over! They’re back! The FCC restored them. https://radioinsight.com/headlines/168229/fcc-report-5-6-fcc-restores-two-ohio-licenses/May 12, 2018 at 7:49 am #182543

Good luck getting whatever imperceptible audience either station had back.
Considering neither buyer or seller lives in Youngstown proper, I really want to see how this count can induce a sale. It’s been five years and nothing will change; the sale will still fail to close.
What is this litigation trying to prove other than Nelson Cintron will litigate you to the nth degree if things don’t go his way.

A few years back when AM radio Guys owned WZUM 1550 Braddock Pa they wanted to buy 1540 turn it off and increase power on WZUM.May 17, 2018 at 9:42 am #182600
With sites like YouTube & music on your phone, digital devices, computers, thumbdrives, and so forth…the general public is slowly but surely getting used to getting what they want, when they want (on-demand), with limited or no commercials.
Yeah…it’s not free & easy like radio. And, sure…cassettes & CDs were around for decades. But, the digital explosion has gotten consumers used to using the web and devices like they used to use mass media. And, ad dollars in huge numbers are following consumers to the web….degrading the business model of mass media outlets.
We can stick our heads in the sand, and be in denial. But, what’s the point in that?
After spending 4+ decades earning my living in the radio industry….it’s hard to see what I grew up loving becoming less & less relevant in most people’s lives. Or, as Bowie once sang….”cha-cha-changes”.
Hey, guys…love it or hate it….it’s a very different world today.May 17, 2018 at 1:54 pm #182605
I heard that Nelson Cintron has applied for an FM Translator in Warren on 100.3 MHZ. If he is applying under the AM relief program, he has to have an AM station to relieve, so closing on the purchase of at least one of those stations is important. Cintron has a non-commercial FM in Painesville that features Spanish language programming so it probably is a good bet that’s what he wants to bring to the Youngstown/Warren market.May 17, 2018 at 5:35 pm #182607

Nelson got the go-ahead for translators for both 1540 and 1570 when Chris Lash pulled the plug.
Clearly, the problem isn’t that he can’t get translators, but that the initial 2013 purchase has never closed, and there’s deeply toxic blood between buyer and seller, and neither wants to budge.
It’s more toxic that you think.

Actually WHTX only has a translator and it is for 97.7
And it is being contested by Rubber city radio on the grounds it will interfere with WONE 97.5
As for WYCL, it had a translator assigned by SANDBLAST, L.P. (Atty Percy Squire) before being reassigned by to COLUMBUS.
Also of note neither stations do not have a valid STA as the FCC only reinstated the license, and the application to assign, no STA as they are LOTS of problems to be sorted out.
As for Chris and Nelson, “toxic” is being nice. From day 1, they had been at each other, from law suits, and disrespect, and everything else, they never made it work, just back and forth.May 29, 2018 at 6:47 am #182709
Are either of these stations on the air ?July 3, 2018 at 8:52 pm #182996
Well, the courts in Youngstown involuntarily transferred control of both stations to a court-appointed receiver, Michael A. Thompson, back on June 7th. Thompson will be tasked with resuming station operations and the consummation of the deal with Nelson.
But that’s not the end of it. Turns out that the FCC never acted on Chris’s deletion request in the first place. Read the second-to-last-paragraph of this Inside Radio piece:
The Commission has so far not acted on Whiplash’s request that the two AM licenses be cancelled. The Media Bureau has typically leaned toward the theory that a radio station remaining in service and broadcasting to the public is preferable to tying up an AM in an upcoming auction—especially when demand for AM stations has fallen dramatically in recent years.
So in other words, contrary to what Chris Lash was telling everyone, there wasn’t any justification to simply kill the stations off. Bad blood between him and the group that’s been trying to buy the two stations since 2012 really is not a valid reason for deletion.
Either Chris totally failed to do his homework on this procedure or he deliberately lied in public multiple times – and got it covered in multiple trade publications and R-I proper – with the intent to kill off Nelson’s acquisition of the stations. The damage has been done; the stations have been off the air for months and presumed by many, including myself erroneously, dead.
