Very rarely do you see a major change at a station comfortably leading its market, but that’s what happened in San Diego as Entercom Soft AC “Easy 98.1” KIFM relaunched at 5pm on Thursday as “Sunny 98.1“.
Moving in a more contemporary direction, the new brand is positioned as “Better Music For A Better Workday”. Running jockless for now, KIFM is promising ten song blocks around all commercials. The station led the San Diego market with a 6.2 share in the March 2016 Nielsen Audio PPM ratings.
The first set of songs on the new Sunny 98.1 included:
Maroon 5 – She Would Be Loved
Kelly Clarkson – Stronger
David Bowie – Let’s Dance
Whitney Houston – I Will Always Love You
UB40 – Red Red Wine
Billy Joel – My Life
Madonna – True Blue
Queen – Another One Bites The Dust
K-Ci & JoJo – All My Life
What?
What makes it any different then KYXY now? What a huge mistake!!
I can understand a few musical tweaks here and there, but this is just suicide. They had a winner and they give it away?
Pay attention SD programmers! A good A/C with some good currents and healthy doses of 60’s, 70’s and 80’s…slam-dunk in San Diego.
These geniuses at Entercom have just given you a huge opening!
