Alpha Media has launched yet another Classic Hip-Hop “G” branded station as CHR “Energy 102.3” Morton/Peoria IL was reborn as “G102.3” at 5pm today.
The syndicated Brooke & Jubal show which had been airing in afternoons on WNGY moves to mornings replacing The Kane Show.
WNGY had failed to make much of an impact against the two other CHRs in the Peoria market. In the Spring 2016 ratings WNGY held just a 2.1 share of the market. Cumulus Rhythmic CHR “Peoria’s 92.3” WZPW held a 6.4 share, while Advanced Media Partners “98.5 Kiss-FM” WPIA does not subscribe. Cumulus’ 101.5 WBNQ Bloomington is also heard throughout much of the market.
Alpha Media, Peoria announced today the launch of G102.3 “The Throwback Station!” WNGY, previously Energy 102.3, will play your favorite throwbacks like The Notorious B.I.G., Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, 2Pac, Destiny’s Child and many more.
Weekday mornings will kick off with Brooke & Jubal from 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM.
Alpha Media SVP/Market Manager, Mike Wild commented on the announcement, “G102.3 will be an extremely fun and exciting station that brings back hits from 10 and 20 years ago when Top 40 was highly rhythm-driven. It’s music from the period when Urban became Suburban.”
“This is so awesome!!! How cool is it that we get to play artists like Notorious B.I.G., 2Pac, and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony!?!?! These are the songs I grew up with and I’m excited to bring them to the Peoria area,” remarked Program Director, Chris “Lucky The DJ” Stewart.
G102.3 can be streamed live at www.g1023.com
Looks like “Energy” didn’t play well in Peoria, but this approach could work
Meanwhile I hope WZPW can reclaim the “Power 92.3” moniker. The “Peoria’s 92.3” branding sound too generic.
There were too many CHRs in that market. Once they began to run syndication in both AM and PM drive, in hindsight that may have been a sign that a change was coming. I agree with WZPW’s current branding being so generic sounding, bring back Power!.
