After stunting all weekend with hourly format blocks, Colonial Media & Entertainment flipped 93.9 WJXY-FM Conway/Myrtle Beach SC to Country as “Carolina Country 93.9“.
The new format will focus on Country hits from the 1980s through today and becomes the third Country outlet in the market. The new format goes up against Cumulus’ “Nash-FM 106.5” WLFF and iHeartMedia’s “Gator 107.9” WGTR.
Christy ‘Sweet Tea’ Androlunis, wife of Colonial Media owner Jeff Androlunis, will program and host afternoons on WJXY in addition to sister “Bob 103.9” WBYB Eldred PA. The station will carry the syndicated Fitz In The Morning, while cluster Assistant OM Boz will host middays. WJXY will also carry NASCAR and University of South Carolina sports.
Original Report 2/10: Colonial Media & Entertainment has closed on its $240,000 acquisition of 93.7 WXJY Georgetown and 93.9 WJXY-FM Conway/Myrtle Beach SC from Cumulus’ Joule Broadcasting divestment trust.
With the closing Colonial has dropped the News/Talk format on both and broke the simulcast. 93.7 WXJY has flipped to Gospel as “Rejoice 93.7” duplicating the programming on new sister 1200 WMIR Atlantic Beach.
Meanwhile 93.9 WJXY has begun stunting with the hourly “wheel of formats” in preparation of debuting its new format on Monday, February 13 at 3:00pm. Among the hourly formats being spotlighted are “Loveland 93.9” with love songs, “The Accordian” with polkas, “The Bowery” with the band Alabama who were discovered in Myrtle Beach, All-Christmas “Santa 94“, and All-Elvis “The King 93.9“.
Colonial Media and Entertainment announced that the Company has closed on its acquisition of two former Cumulus stations, WJXY (93.9FM) and WXJY (93.7FM) in the Myrtle Beach market. The new stations become part of a group that will include five FMs and two AMs in the fast-growing southeastern US market.
The news-talk format on 93.9FM disappeared yesterday, replaced with an hourly spin of the Wheel of Formats. Company Chairman/CEO Jeff Andrulonis says there are several formats under consideration. “With Valentine’s Day coming up, we’ve thought about an all love song format featuring Air Supply, Barry Manilow, and even yacht rock from the 70s. We’d call it Loveland 93.9FM. But then again, I’m a Pennsylvania native, so the all-polka format is appealing to me. 93.9FM The Accordian would play Eddie Stankey, Frankie Yankovic and the Pennsylvania Polka. We might even get wild and crazy and play some Lawrence Welk and punk polka from Polkacide. There are literally tens of people in the Myrtle Beach area who’d love The Accordian.” Other formats that are on the Wheel of Formats include All-Alabama as The Bowery 94 Stereo, All-Christmas (Santa 94) and All-Elvis (The King 93.9FM). Andrulonis promises he’ll make a format decision on Monday, 13 February, at 3pm, at the station’s new studios/offices at 4337 Big Barn Drive in Little River, South Carolina.
Meanwhile, as of Friday morning, 93.7FM WXJY is becoming “Georgetown’s Inspiration Station” playing Urban Gospel music geared to the African-American community in Georgetown County and surrounding areas. Long time Myrtle Beach air personality on WMIR 1200AM, Reggie Dyson, is also working on 93.7 Rejoice FM.
The new 93.9FM and 93-7 Rejoice FM join WMIR (heard on 103.5FM and 1200AM in Atlantic Beach and coming soon to 95.5FM in Conway) and WNMB (heard on 900AM and coming this summer to FM) as part of Colonial’s efforts in the Myrtle Beach market.
