Radio One Inc. has completed its corporate rebranding to Urban One Inc.
The change, meant to signify the company’s growth into television and digital media as well as casino gaming and financial services, was done to correspond to the 18th anniversary of its IPO on May 5, 1999. The Radio One name will stay active as a division of the company holding the radio station properties as will Reach Media as its syndication unit. The company’s Interactive One division will be rebranded as iOne Digital, while a new R1 Digital division will be created to oversee web and social media content for the radio station properties.
Commemorating the 18th anniversary of its IPO on May 5, the only integrated, multimedia company focused on Black culture, Radio One, Inc., is changing its name to Urban One, Inc. Reflecting its longstanding, rich history as the most trusted source to inform, entertain and inspire the African-American community, Urban One will continue to provide culturally relevant integrated content through its iconic brands and platforms – TV One, Radio One, Reach Media, iOne Digital and One Solution.

But aren’t there a few Radio One stations that don’t program formats aimed at African-Americans (I thought they owned a couple of mainstream rock outlets)??
No rock stations, just 2 CHRs
The company as a whole has always generally targeted African-Americans (with the minor exception of the two CHR’s).
In Philadelphia, the company did run WPLY (the current WRNB) as Modern Rock for a few years. Also, when the company was active in smaller markets like Dayton and Louisville, I think it ran a “mainstream” format on at least one station in each market.
You’re right on WPLY. And they did run a couple of mainstream formats in both of those markets (Top 40 in Dayton, rock in Louisville). I’m just saying during the majority of their history as a whole, their core focus has been African-Americans, with the exception of the aforementioned examples. Oh, and they did Spanish programming (and news) in Houston for a time as well.
And I believe they also did Top 40 and Hot AC in the Ville.
