Texas Public Radio has lost its current battle to force Sun Radio Foundation to change the call letters of 88.1 KCTI-FM Gonzales TX.
Shortly before Sun Radio Foundation closed on the purchase of the station from Marantha Church of Laredo, the station changed its call letters from KITG to KCTI-FM. At the same time, Texas Public Radio was in the process of acquiring 1450 KCTI Gonzales from Gonzales Communications. 1450’s General Manager at the time Steven Oakes granted Marantha the right to use those call letters despite Texas Public Radio’s claims that Oakes did not have the right to do so at the time. However, because TPR’s opposition was attached to a Sun Radio application for a Main Studio Waiver, the FCC has dismissed it as an untimely petition for reconsideration and denies the argument that call sign actions are not subject to petitions for reconsideration because they are not “Commission actions.”
