Garett Michaels is moving from a consultant role to Program Director at Local Media San Diego Alternative “91X” 91.1 XETRA-FM Tijuana/San Diego.
Michaels has served as a consultant at 91X for the past year after the dissolution of the SDLocal joint operation made up of Local Media San Diego and the KFMB Stations where he served as Director of Rock Programming and PD of “100.7 KFM-BFM” KFMB-FM. Michaels has a long tenure in the Alternative format where he has programmed WPLY Philadelphia, WPLT Detroit, KYPT and KNDD Seattle, and nine years at “FM 94.9” KBZT San Diego which he helped launch in 2002.
The XETRA-FM Program Director slot has been vacant since last January when Michael Halloran exited.
Veteran radio programmer and consultant Garett Michaels has been named Program Director of Modern Rock 91X (XTRA-FM)/San Diego.
Michaels’ San Diego radio roots date back to 2002, as the founding PD of KBZT, a position he held for nearly a decade. After spending two years as the PD of KNDD (107.7 The End)/Seattle, Michaels returned to San Diego in December 2015 to become PD of KFMB and was responsible for the re-brand of JACK-FM to the highly successful launch of 100.7 KFM-BFM.
In January 2017, following the end of the joint operating agreement between Local Media San Diego and Midwest Television, Michaels decided to exercise his option to leave the KFMB stations and has been serving as consultant to 91X ever since.
“After spending the last year consulting and working with the team, I couldn’t be more excited to officially join Local Media San Diego,” said Michaels. “It’s an honor to be a part of 91X, a station that represents the San Diego lifestyle, has deep roots serving our local community, and is truly one of the icons of the Alternative format. I’m thankful to Gregg Wolfson, Norm McKee and the LMSD Board for making this possible.”
“Garett is the best man for the job,” said LMSD VP/GM Gregg Wolfson. “His knowledge of San Diego, expertise in alternative radio, and leadership skills provide us much confidence as we celebrate 91X’s 35th birthday.”
